pete, as usual, you are the man.

shooter, nice little addition also.

Catchin critters in the snow has always seemed easy to me but catchin em on freeze dried ground in a 30 mph wind with 40 mph gusts is terrible hard to do. Them are the conditions over 90% of the time here where I live so what good would a "track dog" do me? The answer is NO GOOD! I might not have a good race but neither will those folks with the track straddlers here and they wont even accidentally catch a yote. Here is the deal. The worse the conditions, the more of a "track dog" you need "UP TO A CERTAIN POINT". After that, hold on cause the dogs you are gonna need are gonna fly.

Dan, its interesting that you say that. A dont run coyotes much but i've been in a few races in the winter, but on dry ground. anyway I run a beagle walker mix and she runs real real tight to a yote, and will run jump em out of the woods tight on their heels in the open will only be a few yards behind. does the same with fox, but she has never layed a tooth on a yote (at least in a race) and for the most part she doesnt drift a track or run semi silent. I guess it must have something to do with terrain? I really dont know. but I guess thats the reason shesnever caught one  but what do you find better about a dog that isnt a 'track dog'? I'm not saying your wrong please dont think Iam, just curious is all..

The "track dog" thing is just me jack assin around. All the good coyote catchers, no matter the breed could run a track in the right conditions and run it as good as any dog. In the wrong conditions though they would get ahead and abandon the track and run straight across a field or whatever and pick up the yote maybe a 1/4 mile away or better where they could actually deal with it again. As young dogs, these kind of dogs will more than piss me off but when they are 4 and 5 year olds, you will catch alot of coyotes. Maybe, I will put some pics up of what I am talkin about.
