Cowboyvon,

Sorry I forgot to address your question. No that wasn't me that got the Lay female from Riley it was the Liontracker in Colorado who got her and crossed her on some of those French GS dogs. I never heard how that turned out but it seems he never could get her bred. I saw that female one time when I ran into Riley's son in law Mike and she was a sure enough good looking old female. Mike had a dog in there in his truck a big redtick that was out of her and one of Jon Kibler's good lionhounds.

A funny story about an old Bluetick hound I had here one time. Buddy was an Arizona bred Bluetick out of Clell Lee's old Battler dog and crossed on a Sugarcreek female Dale Lee had got from Del Cameron years before. Buddy was used by Harley Shaw Biologist and Author of (A Soul Among Lions) book. Later a friend of mine Mike Rhoden in Gilbert got the old dog and used him on lion. He was a beautiful hound and a real character. I was still coon hunting some of my young dogs then, to get them polished up on trailing for lions. I asked Mike if Buddy would run coons and he said sure he is good on coon.

Well first night out we are on what is called the Farm Road on the Navajo Reservation and the San Juan river runs thru there on it's way to Utah and with some farming around there were usually some coons around. Well this river bed is thick and full of salt cedar and Russian olive tree brush so it is murder to get around in but it also has a lot of big cottonwoods along the banks.

Well old Buddy went out with the young dogs for a bit and came back when he got a little tired and just followed along with us. I thought well the old dog knows more than us and he figures give it a rest there are no coon moving. We stopped and listened for the other dogs and old Buddy layed down and acted like he was going to take a nap. I figured he was just too old and I had better just leave him home in the future. After a little bit I heard him sort of whine and he stood up and trotted off into the brush and suddenly just fell on a tree and went to hammering. We go over there and sure enough a big old sleepy coon was up in a fork taking a snooze. Hmmm? just lucky I guess for him. No sir! 3 more times that night he repeated the performance and nailed three more layups, and we never hit a coon track on the ground. Now that is a layup specialist I would say. LOL!

I have a full sister to that red tick of Mike's (Rileys son in law) and that Kibler dog I believe came from Steve Smith they called him Doc and was one of the hounds on the cover of Kiblers book.

2013 UKC Nite Hunt Laurel, MT. You was hunting Judge with your dog Buddy.
I was Hunting my blue dog John. He made Nite Champ that night. If I remember right the dogs struck and treed right off the bat, but the coon had only crossed over a fence and was gone, the dogs could not get through and we called em treed. Thanks for taking us to a good spot.

Was it a windbreak fence? I remember treeing dogs and they got minused and then they went on and treed again and I didn't want to tree again because I didn't think there was a tree there and figured they were hung up again. I believe it must have been you on the cast that treed your dog and when we got there they were under a coon in a russian olive bush? I should have treed Buddy but I was gun shy after that first tree call. I've hunted that spot more times than I could begin to count and that was the only time that's happened. Glad you had a good hunt.

I had that same thing happen to me years ago but it wasn't in a hunt. Still had to walk bout 3/4 of a mile though to 2 dogs hammerin on a damn fence post. I was so pissed off at first but then I got to laughin at em. I'm not even sure I was old enough to drive then.

These didn't tree on a fence post. The coon went over a windbreak and through a woven wire fence. The dogs didn't tree, they were trying to get through the fence. We backed off and they figured it out and treed the coon.
