I’ve been trying to get my pup some work on coon by taking her down to the river with my older dog. Seems like the coons are scarce right now. Only found I track on the river bank and dogs haven’t struck any either. She’s starting to search good though and attempting to keep up with my older dog.

I’m hoping to get a chance to start them in bear since our spring hound season just opened. Figure I’ll walk them both in and tie them back on the 1st tree. Feeling like my older dog will be ready to go once she sees one and I will hold the pup back until she’s loosing her mind and ready to go

You've got a leg up getting them dogs on bears buddy, go buy a cheap trail camera and pick up some bait and a barrel, also u could build you a coon feeder as well.

Nufo- I don’t know much about hunting bears or coon but listening to the coon hunting podcasts it sounds like the females are denned up due to having kits this time of year. That would explain the lack of sign. Feeders would definitely help.

Yeah that makes sense. I was just killing time before bear opened and trying to get my pup on some game.

I’ll go back in a while and see once school is out for the summer

Well I finally decided to do some much needed maintenance on the huntin rig. I adjusted the front suspension so it sits level, did an alignment, welded up some cracks in the front axle and a axle bracket. I was thinkin it’s ready to go hunting again when I checked the gear oil in the rear end and realized the rear vent tube had torn off completely and let water in. So now I need to change the gear oil in there too.

I also rattle canned the dog box/ headache rack black so it’s now the best lookin part of the truck lol.

Finally caught my first bear of the season today, wasn't much of a race but beggars can't be chosers. Treed first thing then explored new country all day and never got anything else going so after 7 hours I went back and turned loose from the tree figured I'd get a much better race the second go around but I was wrong, went 73 yards and treed again

Those dogs look like they’re thoroughly enjoying that stinky booger! Hopefully you get on to more. How long is your spring season, Joe?

I honestly haven't seen many other hound hunters in the areas I'm hunting, been seeing lots of spot and stalk guys, about 50 percent look the other way when u drive by and the others usually wave or stop and b.s I know that west of us over on the west side of Missoula the houndsmen and houndswomen are having far more success catching bigger numbers.
