Congrats to your wife Rowdy. That’s awesome for her and notice for you that ya might better not get on her bad side lol.

Y’all are right about roading your dogs and potentially putting on lots of miles before you ever get them on game. I use to hunt with an old man that would road his dogs around crop land. Some of these River bottom crops have miles and miles of road around and through them. His dogs were excellent dogs but they were used up before they should’ve been because he put so many unnecessary miles on them.

I had rather road than rig because it’s too much work on the handlers with too much letting dogs down and getting them back up. The % of non run Riggs is pretty high from what I’ve seen. I’d rather the dogs get tired than me. I will say I have never don what I’m about to tell but I was told you can road 8-12 hrs come across a cat and catch it in a hour and half. Dogs must not get as tired as you think.

Lmbo Mule man I do agree with you about better the dogs be tired than me. With hog hunting, it usually works out that both are gonna be tired though. The old man I spoke of had real good dogs and they were in shape. The problem was that he hunted the same dogs pretty much every hunt and he hunted about 4-5 days a week. That’s a lot of miles on a dog in a years time if you don’t get on game. Then if you do and the game runs hard or you catch multiple animals, that’s more mileage and at a harder, faster clip. I guess my alternative to not roading and dogs that don’t rig would be track hunting. I have friends that ride until they find a track they want to put out on. Others cast at deer feeders or bait depending on where they hunt. We cast hunt because of the type of country we hunt and because of what we said about the dogs doing it. I think my dogs should be able to do it from start to finish. It’s one of the things I really love watching. We also can do this style because of the number of hogs. We have a lot higher concentration of game than a cat/bear/lion hunter.

Was told by several people that hunted with the man, he hunted strictly by finding a bobcat track and putting down on it. Started and trained a lot of bobcat dogs that way. I can find a few tracks but not enough to train dogs. The more dust on the road the more cat tracks I can be sure of. Too much gravel here to be good tracking. They say that old boy can tell a cattrack in the dew on a grass road and be consistent.

I’m with you fellas. I really do enjoy hunting on horse back though. I cover 10-20 miles a day but I’m also making circles in country that I wouldn’t be in if I was walking because I can go through the rocks where a horse can’t when I’m on foot.

Hunted all day yesterday without a strike. It was to be expected though, the dogs have been off for a while. Two ended up sore footed because of it. I was hoping to go out today but it rained off and on last night. Tomorrow it’s supposed to rain 1/2” tomorrow so I’ll probably wait until Monday to go out again.

Our archery season started today so ill keep the dogs completely out of any country they might get on anything, just exercise in the open country. First day of general archery antelope season...I shot my bow for the first time in a year today and on the 7th shot I realized my tag had never showed up, gotta love depending on 2 government agencies to work in collaboration to get you something you need(fwp and postal service) went down to just buy a replacement tag which cost 5 bucks and the never hunted a day in her life lady at the country store tells me she can't sell me a replacement because the original might show up and I could shoot 2 antelope and get us both in trouble

Jheeze that’s ridiculous! I had a similar issue with California’s F&G 3 years ago. They never sent my wife’s tag and it was during china virus so their office wasn’t open. She didn’t even get to hunt that year.

Well I’m trying to hunt more since it’s been cooler. But the weather looks like it’s climbing back up to the high 80’s this next week so I don’t know if I’ll get to go out.

I hunted new country on Monday. It’s a 2 hour drive and it turned out to be really good country. I found shit from a what I imagine is a decent tom. He’s been going into an old copper mine and shitting in it. Probably sleeping in the back too, I imagine. It stormed bad Sunday night so pretty much all tracks were washed out everywhere.

I’d have to put a coat on if got down in the 80’s. It was 104 at 7pm here. They say we’re going to get down in the low 90’s maybe even upper 80’s this next week. My pot lickers will be acting like lunatics if that happens.

It’s good you found the bedding area of that ole Tom. If he manages to give your dogs the slip you’ll know maybe how to help them out.

Law: I understand that, I have been in the south and there’s a reason why I’m here…

It’s been in the 90’s here all summer, it sounds like it’s been around 10 deg cooler here than there. But our humidity is a fraction of yours! I think our average humidity is about 15%. I’ll look it up and give the average humidity and temps for each season. It’s pretty much reasonable though.

Its 45 degrees currently at my house right now, Temps are falling fast one day this week calling for 81 then on Thursday a high of 66...fall may be upon us here in montana. I'd be just fine if it never got above 65 year round don't know how you do it down there with those kinds of temps.

Lol I’d be fine with year around 55-65 too. Our humidity is high too. That’s probably the worst part of it.

Law- you and me both! Lol

I picked up yet another project lol. Got a crazy good deal on a little 2wd Kawasaki Mule because it wouldn’t run. I hauled it home yesterday and tore into it today. Found a bad ignition coil. So I’m going to finish changing the oil, giving it a tune up and then go to town to try to find a replacement coil.
