I need to make a correction to my statement pertaining to "Tennessee Lead". As Mr. Clay pointed out in another post, Lead was considered a Deer hound as type yet was also considered as the very best "red fox hound " of his time as far as ability. His picture (to me) looks like very typical of a black and tan with a finer head and not much ear. His whole story seems to throw a big ol wrench in the whole linebreeding discussion due to his infusion as a complete outcross to the running dog world in that area and how much he improved it.
Having said that, I am a staunch believer in the practice of linebreeding as the very best way to isolate and proliferate genetic stock for any particular purpose. Although, I might be a bit sceptical in the degree in which it can and should be done to reach optimum effect (over time), but I am just a student of it and have yet to see that its product being that much better than practices of a lesser degree other than uniformity in certain areas of talent or looks if done well. I think ego and isolation coupled with a lack of humility and openmindedness are the biggest downfalls in any breeding program, but I'm sure I'm one to talk. Breeding is a damn hard undertaking and there are holes in all the theories as far as I can tell.

colbalt, how true it is. i know to most the night hunt game means little. but if one would read and study the rules. i believe all would desire everything required of a hound in those rules to be at minimum what they would expect in their hunting hounds. so it would be at least a measuring stick. your probably saying what is this idiot talking about. this has nothing to do with line breeding. but it does. the united kennel club use to have what was called the P. A. D. this was a acurate counting of every pup from born from a sire. also every nite champion, grand night champion, etc. etc. now i have been away from the game for 17 to 20 years.so i am just using these numbers as an example, but would think they will be close as at one time i knew the actual numbers on lipper. house's lipper who i don't have to introduce to most. probably put 4000 pups on the ground. of these 4000 lets say 400 were on record of being titled dogs. a person that didn't know any better would say wow what a p.o.s. stud dog. now if you researched and found out that the breeders that were line breeding (inbreeding). laid claim to 70% of the titled dogs and they probably do. you would lean even more toward a line breeding program. now the numbers are what they are and don't lie. but this just reflects that you can't out cross to every female people bring in your driveway and expect the numbers to be anything but a horror story. a person advertising a stud dogs only time that they have anything to be proud of are the percentages that come from their own females. and a few select females from friends that are in the loop. all of the above is fact. it is available for everyone to inquire about for any stud that is registered. it is a way to check on atleast some kind of performance. were as unfortunately when we deal with no kind of record, to often all we get is blue sky and hot air. take care, willy
