Marking tracks?

Hey, I'm new to this but I will have to say a lot of what I have read in this post makes me wonder if I would want to associate with some of you. Some of the bickering sounds like a bunch of little girls bitching at each other! There some bad seeds out there that will give us all a bad name, let's just not stoop to that level and play their game.
Man up guys. Take off the skirts and put you boots and pants back on!

An old timer once told me to only mark what you can put on by 10:00 (he would mark 3 tracks) and he said after Noon he considered all tracks free game.

This post is not about marking a track you are working, this post is about marking multiple tracks in order to tie them up, and that is wrong.

I do think it is wrong to put on some one eleses track. I know they dont own it but neither do you.

And old timer once told me that a guy needs to be respectful of other hunters. He believed that tryng to monopolize hunting areas by claiming multiple tracks at the same time was an unsportsmanlike practice. He believed that a guy only had the rights to the track he was actively pursuing. He could not understand how a guy could claim one track while pursuing another (on public land mind you). In short , yes, he thought a guy like that is an A$$. Someone to be disregarded. My old timer told me that he worked hard to be able to spend time in the field, he said it cost him alot of money to keep his dogs and put gas in his truck. He spoke of many things such as not dumping out on another hunter and then racing to beat him to the tree. My old timer said use the common sense that God gave you and quit acting like you own the mountain and every track on it.

I think that it has alot to do with the cat population in an area and how many houndsmen are in that area too. were im from there has only been a couple days were i have not found a cat to run and that alright because our cat population is health as a matter a fact i went out this weekend with a buddy and when we got to the area we were planning to hunt there was 3 pick up trucks already there and had 3 cats to run and could hear them all over the radio and sound like they had everthing marked and most of the roads checked! what did we do, did we get mad! No! we were beat fair and square, what did we do, we went to another spot and found 3 cougars and 4 bob cats! mind you thats a really good day. (to bad the season just closed for bobs hahah there rutting i guess somthing i just learned) we started the wrong end of the tom, and lost that day but like i said we have a great cat population and lots of country to hunt i guess its a whole different ball game when you have a low cat population and have little country to run. But i like our unwritten rule we got hear. JMO take care and happy hunting.

I understand what you are talking about a game hog marking every track in the woods is just as bad as someone that turns out on a marked track.

But if someone hunting by himself puts his name in big letters on the track and puts a big X all the way across the road Before daylight and moves on to see if he has crossed out of the block he should not have to worry about someone being parked on the track or turning out before he gets back at daylight to run the track.

Boot tracks in my opinion do not mean the track is marked. It should be a noticeable mark like 3 lines all the way across the road or something obvious.

I use to hunt public land and if you found a track you better sit on it because no one cared if you marked one and even if you sat on it at about 9:00 all the late birds would show up and there were no tracks left so they just cast in the other side of the block you are on.

This makes zero sense to me, if you found a runnable a track that was unmarked why wouldn't you just turn dogs out and try and catch it?? Go look for another one when your done and try and catch it!!!! Sure glad I don't have to worry about this. I am also glad I have rig dogs, saves me the trouble, I just let the dogs tell me when there is a runnable track !! Damn snow hunters anyway LOL!!!!

DC; what we run into is that we run canyons with the sleds and leave the dogs at the truck until we cut a track, then we go back to the truck and get the dogs and haul them in.

Sometimes while you are gone somebody else finds your track and dumps on it; which sucks but what do you do?

I've been on the down side of this issue far more than the top side. The only thing you could do is haul your dogs with you all the time, but when your crossing creeks and breaking powder for 30 miles its pretty tough on machines and dogs.

A sub track deserves nothing less,

But my initials and address

This is easy in the snow

I need more gear

34 waist, Coors beer

Large sized gloves, size twelve shoes

Oversized jacket, camel pack, too

Box of ammo, .357

Following marked tracks, I’m in heaven

Hey PEGLEG why don't you write some stories of hunts or something? Hell you can even make one up, i'd still like somethin to read being as tallented as you are with the words you put together. Even if you made it up it wouldn't be the first time it has happened on here LOL!!

lol I don't really know. I guess after awhile It's only specific hunts that stand out. I prefer to listen to another persons experience's and perspectives. I already know my thoughts and opinions. I like dogs and really enjoy hounds. most of my hunts follow a pattern of one type or another. you load the hounds saddle the horse then head out get there unload start your circle and hope you hit the right end of your track. hope your dogs measure up to the difficulties they encounter and you know what your talking about when you correct them or lend a hand.
I'm also trashy and don't mind spending the day trying to jump a bobcat out of a rock or brush pile. this type of behavior is usually looked down on around here I'm ashamed to admit I even trail illegals around sometimes, just to see what kind of hell they're willing to endure to make some fast cash or get into our country. a word of caution on this behavior. hounds can find this activity more appealing then they should with the frequent treat of leftover canned foods.
my out look varies from many peoples. I started out as a youngster riding around the country dragging along a few dogs, sight seeing or harassing the wildlife. I tried to do what i was supposed to in a timely manner but was easily distracted at that age. when I turned eight my mom was either feeling blessed or guilty and bought me my first purebred hunting dog a black and tan that turned into a hell of a hound despite me. that same year I also got a appendix quarter horse That was a upgrade from my first string of horses in someways "not nearly as evil minded" . oddly I didn't get a bicycle until I was thirteen although I can't say I ever had a burning desire for one anyways.
I still hunt about the same no need to be the best or catch the biggest ugliest cat out there or more of them then the next guy either. so long as I'm enjoying myself and my training seems effective, I consider each day out enjoyable and well spent. I also like to watch the new generation of pups and ho they compare to the past.

Did I ever tell you about that one time in the Guadalupe mtns. ????
