Yes sir, I got lucky for sure. It has a bunch of time on the clock though. Hopefully it will run good after I put the time and money into it. I got to town and realized that it’s Sunday. The darned atv shop is closed lol.

I totally understand that Joe! I’m still at the point in life where I’m a cheap ass so I don’t want to pay someone else to do the work. All the atv repair shops are closed today too. I had to order the coil at napa, it should be in tomorrow morning.
We have and it’s pretty darned tasty! We’re having a roast tonight actually. Made 6 pounds of summer sausage and 6 pounds of brauts out of it.

Well it’s warmed back up to the high 80’s here. I had the last 2 weeks off and couldn’t hunt much. I have gone out a couple nights to the local lakes to exercise them in the sand hills. They trailed something in the same area both times. First time they put on 3-4 miles but lost it in a swamp. 2 nd time they put on 9-10 miles because they figured out that it went through the swamp. I’m not sure if it was a fox, bobcat or coyote. I’m leaning towards a coyote but I don’t know. Either way, my bitches did real good but finally lost it when it made 3 circles on itself and doubled back on its track. Staying up all night is rough on me now. I’m about worthless for the whole next day.

We finally got a little rain. It’s humid as all get out but temps are down in low 90’s upper 80’s. We went out this morning and caught a shoat and then a big boar and sow that both went over 200#. The dogs relayed again but we toned them back in. No doubt they would’ve been bayed again in short order but my youngest son had a baseball tournament this weekend that we had to get to. Got to watch the dogs do some really nice baying. They were split bayed on the two bigger hogs. Ava gyp was bayed solo and then my Outlaw dog got there and the hogs split. Outlaw stayed there on the sow and Ava got the boar stopped about 600 yards away. A couple more dogs showed up to each bay. We caught the sow and those dogs relayed to Ava. Neither hog wanted to stay put but the dogs were doing a great job in my opinion of not crowding the hogs but absolutely making them understand that they weren’t leaving. The sows butt was showing the effects and the boars pride and joy had plenty of wear and tear from them making him face up. Good little hunt in about 2 hour time frame.

Law- You say a couple dogs showed up at the bay, do you mean random neighbors dogs or your dogs made it? That would be funny if random dogs just showed up lol.

No they were ours, lol. I had two on the ground, my nephew had 3, and one of his buddies had one. All the dogs a very kin to each other. We don’t normally put that many dogs on the ground at a time but with the hot, dry weather we haven’t been able to hunt them in shifts. We usually have split bays too. His dogs will usually go a direction and mine a direction and then fan out. They cover a lot of country quick like that. If they wind or hit a track before they go separate ways they will all be at the same bay or if we they aren’t working something out themselves and someone else locates they will all merge. If it’s a sounder they will usually have multiple bays after the bull dogs go in and catch which naturally causes the bay to bust. We’ve caught as many as 26 in a few hours but up
until about the last 4-5 years we would average 12-18 a hunt in the cooler weather. Now because the hogs run so much harder, we average 8-10 in the cooler months. We have had stray dogs once or twice and other people’s hog dogs once or twice.

Not my story, but a man I've hunted with a few times before went into his dogs baying a hog. When he arrived, there was a coyote joining in the action, when the coyote saw him, it made for a speedy retreat.

Hollowpoint, I’ve watched that happen until they realized I was there a couple of times. It’s always a single coyote. I’ve seen 2-3 of them hang loose out away from the bay 30-40 yards to see what was going to happen or what they were gonna do. I’ve also had them run dogs off from a bay that were bayed solo. I had an old gyp bayed solo once and she quit and came out of the woods and pretty soon after her were 3 coyotes. One of them didn’t make but the other two aborted the mission when I dropped him. One other time I had a male dog, that was an honest dog up until this point, that was fighting a big male yote. I heard the dog go to baying and then he went from baying normal to a weird bay and then only a couple weird barks. He got quiet so I was tracking him and he wasn’t moving so naturally I’m thinking he’s either gotten hurt or he’s caught on something. The closer I get I can tell he’s fighting and it doesn’t sound like a hog battle. Sure enough that rascal had a big ole male yote down and was dealing that yote a bad time. I dispatched the yote and sent the dog on his way. I didn’t get on to him because I didn’t feel like he had a choice and he never did it again. We have a lot of yotes around here.

Dang that’s crazy, guys! I have had yotes come after my dogs but my dogs were substantially larger so the yotes never got too close. But definitely had them coming in and challenge barked. Especially at night. During the day I would shoot them if I got the chance.

lawdawg,
That's pretty wild, so it's not all that uncommon. I'll be heading to Texas on Friday, the ranch we had been catching some big hogs on has been doing a lot of trapping this summer to get rid of the swine, I hope they didn't catch them all.
Then I'll be going to Tyler for the terrier trials, I have a young male that hasn't been to that event yet. We usually do pretty well in the bay pen, but I'm not going to make any predictions or claims, I'll report the results when I get back home.

We will shoot them if we get an opportunity to. I have a couple spots I hunt that are infested. I’ve been thinking seriously about going and doing some calling to try and thin them down.
Hollowpoint, what part of the state is the ranch? I’m between Austin and Bryan/College Station. I lived in Palestine, Tx for about 5 years which isn’t far from Tyler.
