Had a great weekend of training with our 6 month blueticks! Using Mike Leonard's technique we applied Grawes coyote scent to a toy with a footprint sized bottom and then we strategically made artificial footprints through the woods. When doing this, we ran the scent trail backwards so that the scent would be stronger the closer the dogs got to the end. Another thing we did was rub down an area in the beginning to make a bed sized scent pattern for the start. This helped remove excess scent from the toy as well which is good cause we leave the toy at the end of the scent trail for the dogs. Dogs were casually walked around until they stumbled upon the "bed' area and showed interest. This worked every single time. If a dog did not show interest at that point I would have just continued walking the trail until they did. We ran (4) different trails, at (4) separate locations ((2) each day). Right before the dogs would catch the toy we would fire a .22LR to start getting them used to guns. Hope you all had as much fun as we did over the weekend!

Definitely rowdy, I've been making him help chose where we are going and what we are doing more and more. If I notice him not glassing I hand him the spotter and take a nap

. Well found a small female in a patch of snow about 80 yards long and only on the road. Turned my males out on straight dirt and they never missed a beat ,rolled out wide open made it like 2.5 miles and made an odd loop back towards me still opening but the pace had slowed, I picked them up about 300 yards from where I turned out in some cliffs. Didn't catch but I was proud of their first race of the season. I only had the longer rubber duck antenna on the new 300 and I was absolutely surprised that I hardly ever lost communication with them even though I had no line of site and was below them the whole time! So far I'm liking the new setup!
Good to hear the dogs took right to it! Bare ground ain’t no joke, it takes time for them to get into the groove.
That’s good news about the 300! I’m gonna resist for as long as I can since my 200 is only a year old.

Chased 3 lions today...treed the first even though I thought the track was 2 days old, they grinded up a steep face with a ton of deadfall and only made it like 500 yards in 45 minutes then suddenly they were treed 350 yards off the road

small female but I'm not picky got our first lion of the season checked another road in the way high country found 2 juveniles traveling together on a face with snow but again tracks looked old but dump the box!! Dogs smoked it a mile and a half down country and ran out of snow so I hiked in to try and help but another swing and a miss. Blue sounds like a great way to spend the weekend to me! Rowdy I hated that damn 200 , did work worth a damn for me!

Heck yeah, Joe! Strong work bud!
Blue
His technique is proven and a darned great way to start puppies. I’m sure it makes a dog faster than most other ways.

Good video and I still like that young dog, just an eye catcher!
I had a guy call yesterday that has a good size high fenced place. He said they had caught all the hogs or shot them except for a sow and shoat, could I come catch them with my dogs? So I loaded up this morning and cast three bay dogs, 2 grown dogs and a yr old pup. As luck would have it, the dogs dug a hog out but it wasn’t the sow and shoat. My catch dog and the pup both took some bit of banging up but we got his big butt. He was 200+ and had some good teeth. The pup relayed with the old dogs and I put the catch dog up. They finally got bayed again and the other catch dog (30/30) in to that bay. This SECOND big boar was in some bad stuff. I couldn’t get a shot or there was a dog standing in a bad spot. I think he was smelling me causing him to move. So I changed my direction and got around him. This time when he moved he moved across my path from left to right and stopped. The 30/30 bit him right there and he was about 190# with 2 1/2+ inch teeth. The dogs relayed again and we chased a third boar for a long time. They’d get him stopped and he’d break over and over before we could get there. I finally caught them up. They are fat and real out of shape. They’ve been put up since bow season started. I was proud of them and the guy I was hunting for was too. He told me they’ve had several other doggers in there and none of them had made a showing like that. My pup got shoulder cut and he never offered to quit. So I was real happy with them. It was nice to finally get them back out. I do think we hunted once since deer season started and caught 5 in pretty short order and went to the house.

Lol that’s funny. Are all your dogs bred alike or do you mix and match different breeds and lines?

Uh that dude diog and his sister dutch are from a buddies breeding, they are walker and English cross, my other dogs are mostly walker my stud being Jeff Allen bred and my female who is red and white came from a guy here in montana and her breeding is a bit of a mystery but mainly the product of breeding the best of what those old boys had at the time. I've did some investigating and either the wild turkey has removed part of their memories or they just don't want to tell me haha but I catch bits and pieces, I believe she has a bit of running dog in her causing her color which has been pretty dominant in the 3 litters she's had.

I see. Some are funny about the manic potions they use and others just don’t care enough.

Blue: hey we’ve all gotta start somewhere! Not everyone is born into a family of hounsmen but we’re getting there as fast as we can!
