Strong work Joe!

I got out on Sunday, the dogs cold trailed for over 2 miles but lost it once it passed through a clear cut on a west slope around 1:00. I’m not entirely sure it was a lion. But they trailed good and I’m happy with that.

Think it was a fox? At least got a race in! I had an interesting one today, chased a lion in mostly wide open, we front snow to dry ground again and again. https://youtu.be/qO2Ap4Wml_s?si=L2iW2Kg9lKY032RN

A fox would make the most sense. They went up the bottom of a draw to the top of a mountain, skirted the tree line then hooked back down through the trees and headed around the mountain to a saddle where they lost the track in a clear cut.

I turned out on that bobcat the other day and there was a fox track parallel to its track and going the opposite direction about 3 feet apart, at 1 point i was thinking maybe they were trashing but I was wrong, I think I've only ever had dogs run one 1 time but if I were to allow it I would probably only catch 50 percent of the cats I turn out on.

I stepped out of the truck to look at a cat track at around 6am,truck was running but I kept hearing this weird like weizing gasp about every 20 seconds. Took me a minute but realized it was a deer gasping for its last breaths. Race was short even though I waited like 3 hours to turn out. Cat actually put on a great jump race and crossed the road 3 times hauling ass.

Oh wow, that’s super cool to come across! I have heard that one of the only time some old time hunters had a lion kill dogs was after jumping a lion that had just killed. Was that why you held off?

No I waited to hear from a buddy to see if he had found a track to run or not. I've never heard that but could definitely believe it. The lion was the same tom that killed the female i found dead and I assume he killed her over the remains of the mule deer she had killed but just a guess.

Oh okay. They say the lions are all hopped up on adrenaline and are green eyed. They’ll come after a human at that point they say.

Oh I see, did you kill him? Sounds like he was a prime candidate for removal!

Yes sir dogs are getting in good shape, 2 days ago caught a tom and a female about 3 miles apart. My may dog who is 11 i believe and her granddaughter who is like 1 and a half slipped away from the other dogs and treed the female. It was really cool walking in to the tree with to may training up that young gyp. Sad to think her hunting days are so numbered but with all these young dogs continuing on she'll always be there at every tree in a way.

Man, you can’t beat that! I’m a sucker for old dogs. They have all the knowledge, just not the wheels anymore. I think when I finally build my new kennels, I’m gonna try to build a couple big kennels so I can start pairing up pups with old dogs.
