I also contacted all the Senate offices on the committee. I was told by one person answering the phones that all the Senators are out in the district offices this week and that i should contact them at their offices there where i may actually get an audience with the Senator in person. Tomorrow I will be going to Senator Simitians office in person to attempt to sit down with him.

I talked to DFG they don't have the 2011 numbers yet but in 2010 half of the bears taken dogs were involved so how does senator Lieu expect to deal with a bear population that is going to double in one year hire deperdation hunters to do the same thing we're doing but pay them to do it insted of making money on gus like us what a joke

Hey guys, California Houndsmen For Conservation's web site has a list of 9 senators we need to call and oppose SB 1221. The list is on the "Action Alert" page. If you call, their secretary will ask your name, and where you're calling from and pass it on to the senator. Call them all. Of course....be polite! I will be praying also. Even if S.B. 1221 makes it out of committee and by some miracle passes the Senate it cannot be enforced. S.B. 1221 will violate CEQA, the California Environmental Quality Act. Just like the antis shut down opening bear hunting in San Luis Obispo County in 2009 using CEQA we can turn the tables on them and kill S.B. 1221. If it passed it would have a definite impact on California's environment and therefore fall under CEQA's auspices. No EIR (environmental impact report) on S.B. 1221, no S.B. 1221. Now the HSUS has a top notch law firm who in turn uses Live Oak and assoc. for their biological studies and I am sure they are preparing an EIR to continue the fight. So let's get this evil piece of legislation killed in commitee and stick it to the HSUS. -Pete

No, nothing yet. I am betting that the reporter will wait as close as possible to the hearing on the 24th so as to make the situation all the more dramatic and influence the outcome all the more.

The hearing is tentatively set for 0930 in Room 112. Come early to get a seat.

Yes, the attendees will most likely be given a chance to speak. It is also very likely that the time allotted will only be enough to state your name, your organizational affiliation (if any), and your position on SB1221.

If all I get to say is name, rank, and serial number, so be it. This is a war. Although I would rather be shot as a spy, haha, I will still make my voice count by opposing S.B. 1221. Now, this next, true story really sums up what S.B. 1221 and its' backers really stand for. Today, April 13 I got to spend some quality time with my family at the home opener of the San Francisco Giants. The opening was spectacular! The national anthem, fireworks, a flyover from two F-18s from NAS Leemore, a giant American Flag covering most of the outfield, then guess who got to throw out the opening pitch. Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg (D) who co-sponsored S.B. 1221 and called California Fish and Game Commission President Dan Richards a "jackass" because of his legal Idaho cat hunt. I swear that at that exact moment he was annouced the stadium was still fairly quiet as it was very early in the opening ceremonies and most of the crowd, almost half, still hadn't made their way in yet, when I stood up and roundly booed the senator. He probably didn't hear it, but he might have. Then he couldn't even throw a decent pitch! HE BOUNCED IT ACROSS HOME PLATE! Now I really had something to boo about and I wasn't the only one this time. Now really, would you trust a man, to be an elected official of your state, to hold your, excuse me, but GOD given rights as an American to hunt or fish as you see fit (hound,bait-fish and bear, fly,
lure, bow or gun) who can't even throw a damn ball 90 ft. Not me. But hey Senator Steinberg isn't all bad, he wants to legalize online poker in California, and that will....
probably do nothing for the State of California but will probably benefit our Honorable Senator Steinberg nicely. Democracy is a blood sport. Way more unethical and cruel than hunting bears and bobcats with hounds. See you all on the 24th. -Pete

I talked to a guy that Caters big dinners. He just done one last week that had a bunch of Politicians at it. Said it sounded like we were going to lose this fight from what he heard at the dinner. Almost like it had already been decided behind closed doors. I sure hope he is wrong. Please sign my petition. Every time some one signs it it will send 10 emails to the Senators who you guys have listed here. It has 1120 signatures already. It is not much but I think every little bit helps. I sure thought it would be a bunch easier to get a lot more signatures than this. Any ways here is my petition.

[size=150]Is Revenge the Right Method to Manage California Wildlife?[/size]
A recent Los Angeles Times blog sheds some light on what is behind the attack on California hunters… retribution. Entitled, “Controversial cougar kill spawns proposed ban on hunting with dogs,” the story describes some of the motivation behind Senate Bill 1221, which would ban using hounds to hunt black bears and bobcats.

Times reporter Patrick McGreevy wrote on March 26th, “Unable to get a Fish and Game official to resign for killing a mountain lion outside the state, two lawmakers on Monday introduced legislation that would prohibit the use of dogs to hunt bear and bobcat in California.”

The Fish and Game official is Daniel Richards, president of the California Fish and Game Commission, who went on a mountain lion hunt in Idaho, where he successfully killed a cougar. Outraged anti-hunting groups, led by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), persuaded 40 legislators to call for Richards to resign over the hunt, which was completely legal in Idaho as it is in several other states. Hunting groups, however, rallied to his rescue, pouring calls, emails and letters in to the legislature, which finally abandoned its attempt to remove the commissioner in March.

Now it would appear that the anti-hunting lobby and the politicians they work with want payback. And that payback is in the form of taking hunting rights away from California hunters. But is that any way to manage wildlife?

California’s method of conserving wildlife is based on the North American Model of Wildlife Management, in which hunters and anglers pay through their license fees to fund professional biologists to set seasons, bag limits and methods of hunting. The system is deliberately set up to be separate from the partisan political squabbles that take place in the capitol. The real story of this bill sets a terrible precedent. It demonstrates why wildlife management should not be political. Natural resources, including wildlife, are too important to be pawns in the dirty pool that has become common place in politics today.

Senate Bill 1221, was originally a bill that dealt with air quality issues. But since the deadline to introduce new proposals had already passed, anti-hunting legislators stripped out the original language and dropped in the section banning the use of hounds to hunt bears and bobcats. This move took place late in the process to prevent sportsmen from having time to rally supporters and explain that hunters are being paid back by anti-hunting legislators for having the audacity to defend the right of a fellow hunter to go hunting.
