I was wondering what the houndsmen in New Jersey run your dogs on. And how hard is it to get on some decent land with game on it. I'm interested in running some hounds but worried about not being able to have enough game.

Do you live close to the Water Gap? If so, you have tons of acreage to run coon on.

Only hound hunting here is coon and rabbit also i believe you can run coyotes if i read it right.I train here on coons but i run out of state.I keep the hounds in NC.Work with pups here ,only land here is state land or county unless you have enough cash and time for a club and you end up spending more time on work detail and meeting's then hunting.

I live in NY, not NJ, but I just turned my redbones loose on an alleycat in my Brooklyn NY driveway a few minutes ago! There are fences, so they don't catch. I would hate to hear the neighbors if they did!

Don't know where in NJ you are, but there is a fair amount of state land, and down south there are farms you might be able to get permission on. Toward the west, summer camps out of season are great coon spots. One problem is that there are a lot of bears, and it is illegal to chase bears. I would hate to have to break a hound off bears...

I don't know of any coon clubs in NJ, although I believe there are a few fancy mounted fox hunts. There are plenty of coon clubs in nearby PA, though. My home club, the Sullivan County Coonhound Assoc. in Jeffersonville NY is not too far from some parts of Jersey. We just had our last UKC hunt of the season, and our next event is not until February, but you would be welcome at our club. The business meetings are not political and its not particularly expensive, but you would be welcome at events whether you are a member or not. You don't need a hound to attend and there is no charge, although a purchase from the kitchen in support of the club is always appreciated. pm me if you want more info

I live in morris county. I'm about an hour from the water gap and about 45 mins from NY.

There's tons of places to hunt in morris, passaic, and sussex counties, head out Berkshire Valley rd or greenpond rd towards Rt.23, all that is Newark Watershed property, cross rt.23 and head up clinton rd, in Newfoundland, thats still unbroken woods all the way to the NY border, loads of woods roads that will get you out of sight of prying eyes, along the delaware river theres tons of corn fields that back up to the river, the only problem is the bears, I grew up down there, I used to run the woods all over that part of the state, I wish someone had introduced me to hounds back then....good luck let us know what you find.....john

thanks for the info..just gotta convince my mom that me getting a coon hound or two is a good idea.

Oh, that could be a problem, my wife didn't want one either, that was four years ago, she loves her now! Coon hounds are great dogs, I couldn't imagine not having my hound in my life, hopefully I'll be able to get another soon....john

One thing that i've been thinking about is that any hound or cur i get will have to be broken off of bear and bobcat. Now I'm planning on moveing out of NJ after college. Now the thing that has me worried is if i move to a state where i can hunt bear or bobcat is there a way to get a dog to run game they have been broken off?

Not really. Don't know where you are in your education, but, after you move, you will probably want to get a second dog to run on bear.
Where I am in NY, we can only chase bear legally for a few months in the summer, and only during daylight hours. When we're nite hunting for coon, the dogs do "trash" on bear sometimes. Its pretty hard to explain to hounds that its the wrong time to chase bears... Lucky for me, there's not too much enforcement in the middle of the woods at night. As long as you don't tree a bear in some anti-hunter's back yard, and don't harvest, you're not likely to get in much trouble over it. Just don't run bear intentionally, and don't brag about it when it happens by accident.

I'm in my senior year of high school and will be in NJ for 3 to 5 more years. Thanks for the info Emily.

just thought of another question to add to this thread. what breeds of hounds/curs do you guys in my area run.

most NJ coon hunters run the old fashion black & tan,bluetick and comp hunters run walkers
