what do you think?

Post by walkersrule »

i have a buddy in nevada that offered me a hunt on lions. i have bobcat dogs and live in oregon. if i take my dogs and get after lions are they going to be lion crazy when i get back? or do you think they are going to still be looking for bobs? the real question im having is; do i take my dogs or do i leave them home? they do have bobs so maybe i just turn out on them and not lions? or if i do it late in the year (march), and lay them up after that, will they be looking for lions next persuit season (august, september)? i would kinda like to get others perception on this so im not thinking all on my own. the dogs i have are used to treeing cats so the whole thing about hunting over in the elko, nv area has me kinda leary anyways because of getting them tore up. the other thing is that its illegal to hunt lions in oregon with dogs, so am i going to dig myself a hoe if i hunt them on lions in nevada, for a week or so? im just a little leary about the whole thing so i would like to hear your oppinions.

Jimmy, if it was me, I would take a dog. Maybe not all your dogs, but how you gonna enjoy the hunt if you dont have a dog or two? It is just not the same. Twenty years from now when you are looking at pictures you will appreciate seeing your dog there beside you. You must have a pup that is not completely broke yet anyway. He could probably tree the right lion all by himself. Then when you get him back home you just have to teach him we are not hunting lion any more. Smart dogs can figure it out with some help from their trainer.

IF you were a new hunter tagging along to learn, and your dogs knew nothing, I would tell you exactly they opposite: by all means leave all your dogs at home. But you are not that.

Guys out here go between hunting bobcat and coyote, if you can beleive that. They have success at both with the same dogs.

obviously, you will have to decide if it is worth the headache of breaking the dog off lion again. Then weigh the value of memories and pictures of doing something "they used to let us do when I was young".

david,
i am thinking about taking one dog. i have three of my buddies that like to hunt that are going with me. i wouldnt feel right if i was on a lion hunt and didnt have one of my own dogs there. it would make me feel like a spectator. i dont like sitting in the stands. if the dog does good then great, but i hope im not gonna have a big problem when persuit season starts next year. i really dont like walking into the big cat trees personally. seems they always stare at me and i would just as soon shoot them as to be there in the first place. but that isnt legal so i dont want them running them to begin with. i really dont know what to do. i guess im just gonna have to take a dog. well see how it turns out.

personally myself i would go for it. I live in oregon as well and if i get the chance to go to nevada im gonna be all over it. In all honesty when you get back and start running the bobs and they happen to cross a big track you would just have to go get them and take em back to where they lost the bob track and just let em know that that is what you want them to run. it all sounds good in theory dont it, and i am sure that it will be easier said then done. but like the other guys said it all depends on if you want to break them all over again and is it worth the memories to you? for me i think it would be completely worth it, because if you think about it we would all love to go and sit with some of the old time houndsmen and listen to all of the tall tales they have and the only reason they would be able to tell us is becuase of those memories that they have created for themselves. so thats my two cents on the deal but thats just me and im out for the fun of it and if i have to break my dogs agian well that just gives me another excuse to be out in the woods. and the other question is do you plan on ever going to nevada again? i will say this though, even in this state there are verry few strickly bobcat dogs and if you want to remain someone that has one of the few "bobcat packs" here in oregon then you have to ask yourself that question as well. so i doubt i helped with anything and i am anxious to see what you choose to do and if you do go then i would like to hear how the dogs do when you get back. anyhow good luck with whatever you choose to do. c ya

marshal,
its not the breaking that really bothers me, its the geting tore up that does. my dogs seem to think that a bob is as easy as a coon and with a big cat i dont think itll be pretty.
i dont really have the money to be giving it away to some half hitched vet if you know what i mean.
i like to take care of wounds on my own and its not that hard with bobs. penn g works good and ammoxicillin does too. the deep cuts of a lion, now thats a differant story. they dont have the trees that we do. they have lots of rocks and bluffs. thats the part that im worried about.

Strange to consider your position. I would not think twice to go to another state with a friend and run lion. But I see your situation, sounds like you have some specialized dogs and if you want to keep it that way I'd keep them off anything you don't intend to hunt. No doubt you'd do fine on lion with a dog that can catch bobcats. Also a comment about getting your dogs hurt with a lion. Its true a hound will need some experience to handle a lion if they catch it on the ground. Most lions tree or get somewhere out of reach. If a dog likes fur in its mouth and can get to it there will be trouble... but that's where numbers will help out Id say four or more dogs greatly reduces the chances of any one dog from getting whipped too bad. In most situations things don't get too bad.
Good luck
