How do you get a dog to stick to the tree?

I have a two year old dog that is one of the coldest nose, best trailing, easiest handling dogs that I have ever owned, but he will not stay at the tree for more than 15 minutes and I know he is at the tree cause I have seen it on my gps. I know its not because any of my dogs are growly at the tree cause I have a female that will leave the tree if there is a mean dog there. This dog will either go back to the truck or he will find me and then follow me to the tree and when he gets there he trees harder than any of them if i am there. I just dont get it. I hate to get rid of him cause he does everything els so great. Any suggestions?

Never had that problem before so don't know for sure. I would just make sure I sent a dog with him that was a stay put tree dog, atleast you will keep the animal in the tree until you get there!

Chase dogs VS. Catch Dogs. I have had a few dogs like this. Each one of them would get to the tree and stay for a few min. and then start circleing looking for something else to run or come back to me. They had a lot of desire to just chase and not much patience when they caught.
When you get to the tree, tie them up asap in a spot that they can see the game and see if you can get them to see game in the tree; when they do; praise the crap out of them. Also; jumping game out of the tree is no good for these dogs(it's no good for the game either but that is another discussion). It just reinforces the behavior.
Doing this for a while seemed to correct mine so maybe it will yours? Dunno; but it is worth a try.....???
Good Luck!

Yea I tie the dog up as soon as I get there, I hope as he gets a little older he will realize to stay at the tree but only time will tell.

I've gotta agree with BGH on this one. I've never seen a non treeing dog have any amount of heart/catch. I've seen plenty that tree that didn't have it either. I wouldn't even bother. If it's over a year old and been out of the yard more than couple times (AND seen game) I'd cut my lossses. You can't put something in them that isn't there. A dog that just ran it's heart out to catch and kill something, sure as hell isn't going to be milling around. It's gonna be there waiting.

i have a 2 1/2 year old female that has more hunt and drive in her than any dog ive ever seen and she dont tree . when i strike a cat off the box she will range like no dog ive ever seen to find the track. she cold tracks like she is a 8 year vet.fast , minds like a dream but wont tree. she is always there when i get there . i dont like coon hunting but i think that would be the only way to get her to tree . walk hunt her along the river by her self . havnt done it yet because i dont want to make her coon crazy but i think that is my only opion maybe yours to.

Not sure what all type of hunting you do whether it is bear, coon, etc, but a good way to get a dog to stay put is when you get to the tree if he is there ties him close to the tree as you can get, get him used to being there with the other dogs, if he comes back while you are headed into the tree cut a switch and make him go back, if that doesn't help, start tieing him back just out of reach of the excitement, shoot a coon out or whatever, let all the other dogs work it over and make him watch, don't let him touch the game, if he is a smart dog he will figure it out.
Other thing you could do is build up his confidence some, get him out by himself and see if he will tree alone, if he will you will know it is a problem w/him being around other dogs.
There is a lot of different things you can try, every dog is different, you just have to find out what works best for him. I don't think I would give up just yet if he is doing ok with everything else.

Last year during Lion season he wasnt as bad about leaving and he has treed two lions by himself and both of those he was in the tree with the cat. This bear season when I was running with more dogs is when he started leaving the tree, but I dont think it was because of fighting I think there were just a lot of dogs and maybe he didnt like bears too much idk, but last week we treed a lion with five dogs and I watched him on my GPS go and tree at the tree for abou 15 min and when we started walking in he came back and that really pissed me off so im gonna take just him and try to tree a lion this weekend and hope he will stay treed.

Just because a dog don't bark don't mean it doesn't "tree"
If that dog is at the tree sitting there waiting for what it caught. It's treed wether or not its barking. I've seen dogs that don't bark - those are pretty rare. They stare, jump at the tree, chew, climb, stand on the tree. Just because they aren't barkin don't mean they don't care.
There is a big difference in a dog that just wants to mill around, trail around, and isn't interested in whats in the tree. A dog that goes back to the truck, or just plain leaves, isn't in it to catch

Superglue?
Seriously, I have one dog that is a little hyper that did that when he was younger. I am an old lady and slow getting to the tree. He would get impatient waiting for me (someone younger had started him), and come back to get me. He only did this when my other dog was there to hold the game, so it wasn't a huge fault in my eyes.
As he's matured and gotten used to my slow pace, he is doing this less. However, once, last summer, we were chasing bears. He and my other hound split in deep and the battery in my tracking receiver died. I went into town to get a new battery, then went into the other dog first. The impatient dog joined us at the other dog's tree. He went back to rushing me for a few hunts after that.
This dog trees his heart out when he's on a tree. I think he's just plain exasperated that he ended up with such a plodding hunter!
I didn't have to do anything to get him to stop the bad behavior, just instill some faith that I would get to the tree eventually. I do find it helps to shout to him avery five minutes or so to let him know that I'm on the way.

Now that I think about it earlier this spring I left him out for almost two days cause I couldnt get to the dogs, that is when he really started leaving the tree a lot more often, maybe that has something to do with it.

You cant train for treeing; you breed for it.
