hi all, i have been reading these post for days lots of great times and info. anyhow last winter i became interested in cat huntin after i started seeing a few out runnin my coyote hound, well we went an got a plott for my sons 10th birthday. now we got a bit of snow and the pup is 10 months old. my big plan is to walk the pup on the cat track every chance we get till he might start trailing. i had thought about cuttin him to my hound on a yote but it seems like it would be harder to switch him over than start alone. no chance im buyin a started cathound this decade so any tips would be greatly appreciated. my son loves the idea of walkin 7 miles through the woods on a track, he is ready with a backpack too carry lunch in lol. im hopefull he can tow me that far in a jetsled  thanks

Thats the way I train my dogs on cats.....I walk 'em on a track til we jump it, really helps em get the idea of cold tracking I feel.....Usually if the dog is old enough/has enough brains the warmer the track gets the farther ahead of you he goes. Once the cat gets jumped then the fun begins. The first couple runs may be short and frustrating as the cat runs tight circles and the pup losses it or the pup blows the tree.....

Dunno what your coyote hound is as far as breeding but you may wanna try him on a cat track see if he likes it or takes it; that way your pup has a dog that has at least run something to help him out....Unless you wanna keep your 'yote dog a pure 'yote dog....Cause I know mine switch from bobcats to 'yotes and vice versa in the winter and it can be a bit frustrating but I don't like specialist dogs, I like my dogs that can at least run a few things poorly as opposed to just running one thing poorly, haha....

And your kid has the right idea! Thats why bobcat is my favorite, I love to leave the truck at first light and get back at dark after following a cat track.....Best part about it

thanks for the reply hounder. i tried to put my walker on a hot cat track last winter, it was smokin hot i saw the cat makin them. he had 0 intrest. he's 100% walker an i belive the line is blackoak . good friend gave him to me. sired by vargy's hunter i think. he;s straight coyote as far as i can see. medeocre nose he'll cut to any dog he can hear driving. not much on the start not a cold nose. if i put him on the right track he'll go if he shows a little intrest an quits i walk him in if it gets warm enough he will go ahead an jump it up. once its up he does good i had a couple runs last winter he went 5/6 hours alone, was all but done in when he was caught lol. he isnt the best ive seen by any means but i like him i'd take onother like him any day.........i am lookin foward to findin a cat track an gettin the training started. might get a dustin tomorow nite. going to be hard to run yotes and train a cat hound lol. i'm kinda glad my coyote hound didnt want the cat. i like a straight dog. when i let him go i dont want to worry about deer yards moose yards an all that. later. :beer

I started my bluetick from scratch. I walked him over more ridges and through more swamps than I can even remember. Actually I'd say he walked me! Went through a few pairs of boots. Even been turned around with the ol boy! But that's what makes this sport fun. Many many memories to come. Stay persistant. I was following an old dog of mine 3 winters ago on a cat track in coburn gore here in maine. My bluetick was only 12 maybe 13 weeks old. I followed my old dog a long long ways in bout a foot of snow and my bluetick stayed right with me. Up over one ridge just to find another. He stuck right with us all day. We never did catch up to my old dog. You will truely enjoy walking cat tracks with your pup. Keep us posted on the progress and the long long LONG walks you and your pup experience
