I have seen a couple cats shot with the 17. It was before we had any choices in ammo. It was less than deadly on them. Made a hell of a mess when you skin them and bleed like crazy if you had to pack one.
I like 22wmr. I just got a new one for xmas. Taurus 9 shot pistol.

Bobcats are extreemly easy to kill. If they are stationary(treed) a 22 long rifle hollow point is all you need. I have whacked many a cat with my old Colt Woodsman and a lung shot and they are dead when they hit the ground . Even 30 plus pounders are easy to kill. A coon that big can take a heck of a lot more killing. You first thought should be to a quick humane kill with presise bullet placement and the least possible damamge to a prime fur pelt.
Most old trap line guys would use a 22 short solid right between the peepers.

I use a 17 hmr and my boy uses a 22 mag pretty much the same thing, they kill em fast. but like mike said it doesn't take much. I use to use the 22 long with a cci stringer but they are hard to find anymore.

I like my taurus 22 mag pump. Its fast enough to place a second shot if I screw up the first.

It's kinda goofy that someone as picky about dogs as I am would care so little about what gun i have. All I ever use is a .22, unless I dont have a gun and someone hands me something else.
For shells, i use whatever happens to be in my pocket or pack; hollow, solid, long, short whatever. It is usually a smorgasboard mixture of various brands and types of shells i have bought at the gas station through the years ha ha. Kills em dead. If the only thing i have is shorts and it doesnt kill em dead, it knocks em out and that is enough.
I have a single shot bolt action, dont even know what it is, or care. I have owned a remington nylon semi at one time that i really liked a lot. Dont think i could look into a scope if i had too.

pretty sad, I know. But I dont think I have killed any less cats than I would have with something a little more impressive.

I use and have always used a ruger 10/22,Very reliable and if ya need more than one round then all ya gotta do is keep pullin the trigger.I have killed allot of critters out of trees with that little gun.Pretty light weight and it takes a beating but keeps on a shootin

Any kind of shell will work, although i have had hollow points mushroom on coon skulls without penetrating before.Bobbers are very easy to kill out though. One shot one kill usually.I have used a 17 HMR a few times before but they just dont seem to do as good as a good old .22 cal. They might just go a little to fast and they dont seem to have the knock out power of the .22 LR.
