Wolves Killed my Dog

Post by sheimer »

Yesterday morning me and 2 of my friends dumped our dogs on a 2 day old lion track and they were cold trailing up a hillside. We each dumped 2 dogs. About a half mile up the hill, the pack split. Both of my dogs and one of my brothers went up a ways and started paralleling around the hill and the other 3 started paralleling under them by about 150 yards. We were watching on the garmin and listening from the bottom of the hill. My two and the other one trailed over the hill and headed for the next drainage to the east. Me and my brother decided to drive around to the next drainage while our friend stayed with the other dogs. When we got to the next drainage our dogs were split up and we could only get a signal on 2 of them, one of mine would not show up on the Garmin. We went up and gathered up my female that we had signal on and then went and gathered up my brothers. When we got his dog, he had blood spots down his back and was acting kinda funny. We just assumed he had found a dead dear and rolled in it. During this time the other dogs had treed and we assumed that my other dog had come back and joined them. We then drove around and walked to the tree with the two dogs that we had just gathered up. My female wouldn't leave me by more than about 50 yards and my brothers dog just acted funny still. When we got to the tree, my other dog wasn't there so we gathered up the dogs and went back to get the trucks. I drove back around trying to get a signal but had no luck. I ran back home to see if anyone had called and then drove back up to try again. Something wasn't feeling right by this time. I went home and ate supper to give my dog some time to get to where I could get a signal or get to a road. After supper I went back up again and could see the Garmin getting a signal on the little thing in the upper corner of the screen, but it wouldn't get a complete signal or something, Needless to say, it would not tell me where the dog was. I kept driving up onto knobs and finally got a signal where he was. He was a mile and a half from me. I drove up closer and yelled and honked, but he never moved. I went home and got a 4 wheeler and drove to him and found him laying there dead and wolf tracks everywere. My brother called and said that his dog had been chewed on and hadn't really rolled in a dead deer. His mouth was chewed up and he had holes all down his back. His ribs were all swelled up today. I got home and checked my female better and she has holes in the base of her tail as well. I called the game worden and he said that he was sorry, but there wasn't much he could do.

This is something that your supposed to read about or hear about, not write about. My kids took it kinda rough as well as my wife. I can't say tht I'm taking real well either.

I am terribly sorry to hear about your hound, if I were you I would take pictures of the scene and get as much publicity as possible..newspapers, magazines, etc. I would also contact Helena and push them to take some kind of action..I'm sure we would all like to hear what they have to say for themselves. We all know what needs to happen to make our woods safe for our hounds, and it's time they recognize what we are up against here in the Northwest. Their sad attempt at a hunting season to "manage" the wolf population is little more than a joke, a 75 wolf quota in region 1 is a drop in the bucket and they know it!
Real sorry for your loss!

Sorry to hear about your dog!!!

It sucks, and is something that happens here in WI at least 30 times a year. It's even gone beyond the hunting dogs now, and some house dogs on the chain are getting it. Still not much is getting down. Really doubt much will ever be done. Too many tree huggin liberal bleeding hearts out there. That believe we need them, and they have the right to live.

A friend of mine is out hunting by you now. Told me the other night that I would never hunt out that way. As there are too many wolves, and some real big ones.

Still though. If you hunt in wolf country. It's not if it's going to happen, but a matter of when it will happen.

Scott, sorry to hear about your dog, that is one of the main reasons I do not hunt the mountains any more and stay to the low country, they havent gotten established there yet! What drainage were you in and which dog was it? Andy

Andy, We turned out at Pine Grove campground in the West Rosebud. They trailed onto the EL and almost made it to the East Rosebud. It was the Male from Bill Raville. It's not like he was the best dog in the world, but he was my best dog.

Is there some sort of orginazation that can use this loss to help get better control for the wolves? I guess that I never though that it would really happen, but now that it did, is there any good that can come of it?

One of the worst parts of all this is watching my female hound at the end of her chain barking for the male to come out and say "Hi" to her.

Thanks for all the condolences,

Scott

That really stinks. I saw photos of what the wolves did to Ol Charlie when they got him outside of Cody a few years ago. It is not a pretty sight for sure! Those wolves are a bunch of killing machines! And they wonder why the elk population is dropping in Yellowstone!! Hmmm wonder what could be killing them?? Heard the bison population was down also. Maybe one day they will figure it out that relocating the wolves to Yellowstone was a dumb as putting a T Rex in New York City. Oh I forgot.... But the wolves are sooooo pretty!! Yeah right!!
I like my men like I like my mountains...... Rugged, challenging, and WILD!!!
