Artifically Insiminating a female (Breeding)

I have a male and female that I am trying to breed. The problem is that during her last 2 heat cycles the male just can't seem to hit the bullseye? I have tried to get the 2 tied but it just isn't happening.

I have seen it done with cattle, but do they make a shot for dogs that induces a heat cycle, and if so can a vet pump sperm from the male and artifically insiminate the female. Like I said, we used to do it with cattle, just wanted to know if they can do it for dogs?

Don't think the induced heat goes so well, but the AI is a breeze.

Thanks, so do they sell a kit to pump the sperm from the male? How does that work? I know with cattle the guy just shoes up and you pick what sire you want and he does his thing? Thanks for the reply!

the vet will need to monitor the heat cycle to find the right day to AI. Not sure what the goin rate is, but it is gonna cost me $90 a pop and the vet figures we'll have to check about 5 times til we get the cycle narrowed down to the correct day. The AI is just an office visit charge of $35. Cellection for frozen is about $200 a pop, so i am assuming it is the same for chilled or fresh. I will be satisified if I can get the whole thing done for $700-$800. Selling two pups will cover the expense. The actual AI is pretty simple, but finding the ovulation day and collecting the stud are the exspensive parts. If you have both dogs there you could probably do it yourself til she takes and try to save the $$. Sounds like you want to make the cross pretty bad though so it might be worth spending a few $.
Far as inducing heat, all reproduction specialists i have talked to advise against it, they don't have dogs figured out like they do cattle. Cabergoline is a drug you could look into on the net, it seems to be the best route with the best results for inducing a dog.

i successfully used cabergoline last year on a female. the only problem i had was two of the males only dropped one nut. i don't know if it was related to the drug or not. that same female, bred to the same male with no drugs this time, is due next in a few weeks. i will have to see if there are any issues to compare. i know fertility drugs in people can cause some defects sometimes.

Depends on how much work you want to put in, I have an English Bulldog and there alot of work, A friend on mines mom used to do it all for her E.BDs from male to female, sometimes they may just need a CHUCK TENDER

My vet narrows down the cycle and then breeds three days in a row. I get a kick out of the female vet techs trying not to laugh while the male vet is extracting the semen.

You don't need a kit.
Just a baggy to collect and a turkey baster to deliver and just keep it warm in between.

Sterilize everything or the viability will go way down.
If your bitch will flag and stand, your male should get it done.
