Im kinda new to the hunting with hounds but i was wondering how exactly you can tell the size and sex of a bear in the tree, because we have treed some that looked HUGE in the tree but then we harvested them and they were nowheres near as big as they looked and well the sex of the bear i basically know the just of it but sometimes they look big enough to be males but they were females.

I personally have only taken one bear out of a tree but have seen several in trees and also two seasons over bait in Quebec. One thing I can say is that when you look up a tree they always seem to look big at first. If they are curled up this can be worse. By looking them over in Quebec you get a little better at it. The best 2 things I can say are: 1: the size of its head, look at the distance between their ears, If they are narrow, they probably aren't that big. A wide blocky forehead with a noticable crease in it usually shows a bigger bear, or at least a mature one. 2: the length of a bear. All bears look round and fat, but if they are short they can only weigh just so much. If the bear happens to be standing in a way you can see his length that helps. i shot a 260# that was 6'. i would say that anything close to that is a nice bear. Here a 200# is above average so if that is the case where you are I would look for over 5'. Hope this helps, I'm no expert, and I will close by saying that a bear is one of the hardest things I know of to judge, Good Luck,
Dave

The best way is to look for testicles or the penis sheath (sometimes you can see the long peice of hair). Alot of people say they cant see um in the tree. Make the bear move some in the tree to see.Alot of times if you bang the tree a few times the bear will piss. You can tell that way also. And of course if the bear is really big with a huge head and small ears 9 times out of 10 its a male. If your still unsure let the bear go theres no such thing as having too many bears to run specially in our areas we run.

Alll of the above is good info. another thing to consider is the size of the tree,a bear can look like a monster in a sapling and a cub in a tree with a 5' butt.Hope it helps, good luck in the coming year.

hey guys when you look at these bears in trees look at the nose , is it long and pointed or short and flat long pointed nose is usually a sow short square is usually a boar ,i said usually i have been fooled by some just a thougt . when trying to judge size look at the ears , if they are long its a smaller one if they are small or hard to see they ;will be larger. you can look at pics on my web site there are several over 500 lbs . there are alot to look at to judge sizes from .
