i have a redbone i was wanting to no if one hound could put a cat up a tree, and if a redbone would be a good dog to run cats. thanks

One of the best bobcat dogs I ever hunted with was an old redbone female. Of course, that does not mean that they are all good. And, yes, one hound can sometimes tree a cat by itself. Much better to have 2 or 3 good ones together.

hey thanks briarpatch. he is trailing bobcat glands that i drag and then put in a tree. which should be my next step. should i trap a bobcat and let it go in front of him and then let my dog dog go after him.

catch you a house cat put gland lure on it and turn it loose give it 15 minutes and then put the pup on it

Have caught many cats with just one dog. Only problem is that if he or she getts layed up you are done hunting. later, Andy

Depends on where your hunting.

IMO your best bet is to hunt him with a good dog where there are plenty of bobcats. If you are unable to do that then Frog has given you an option worth doing. If you can live trap one, then I would suggest turning it loose where the dog cannot see it, wait 5 minutes and see if he will trail it. If so, then he just needs hunting.

My first hound was a little redbone that could and did run and tree bobs on her own. She was incredible even though she was the runt of the litter and only got to be about 30lbs. I never had one that could match her nose on cats and she was a bobcat eating fool! I haven't had hounds in 10 years but am looking to pick up one or two so I can get back into. Redbones and Blue Ticks are my first choice...in that order.

Run your pup on a lot of house cats, and like some have mentioned get together with another guy with an older trained dog if you can. Experience is the best teacher and they do learn from older dogs. Make sure you mix it up though so your dog doesn't become dependant on the older dog to make game. Run him by himself on house cats to build his confidence.
