The Humane Society of the United States has taken clips from my DVDs and others hoping to gain funds to end hound hunting. I have already spoken to one lawyer who says the "Freedom or Fair Use Act" allows people or groups to take small clips of film from a video to make a point or political statement and take an opposing view on an issue before the public. WOW! I guess what that means is if any of us copy a video (from beginning to end) for a profit then we have broken the law, but if a non-profit group does it for a political cause like ending hound hunting then it's OK! And it doesn't seem to matter that they attached a donation flag to that video and acquire thousands or millions of dollars to assist them in their "just" cause.......
Well, all I can say is I'll be damn! I might also say it's about time we end our inside fighting and talk about ways to protect our sport. I would recommend that those of us with the energy to attack others should channel it into a greater cause. I do plan on speaking with another attorney for a second or third option, but realize that HSUS has the high ground in this fight. And we better get our act together and devote our energy and efforts in actions that better our position rather than tearing each other down.
I thought that I was beyond the fight and winding my hunting career to an end, but the fact that HSUS has used my film and slapped hound hunters around has lite a fire in me that had gone out. As most of you know, I have kept most all of my dogs and therefore have taken offense to the comments made about the mistreatment of the ways we us and feel about our hounds. I also realize that many of you also look at your own hounds as family, and would take their loss nearly as badly as the loss of a child.
I don't propose to have the answers as to what we need to do to defend our sport or change attitudes by some of the public. However, we need to get our message out their and be in the fight to educate people on our sport. People have been talking about donations, well, we better all find a group who has our best interest at heart and get behind them........
