Coyote Question

I'm new to running coyote with dogs. I've heard of doggin coyotes with curs then shooting them, but I've only talked to one guy that ever ran them down with dogs, he used greyhounds.

Do scent dogs like blue ticks, or red bones work? Or does it take a faster running dog?? Just curious if a good cat dog could pick it up or if you have to have more of a sight dog on them. Also how big a pack do you usually run? We get a lot of good sized packs of coyotes around here. Turning out on a pack like that could be disasterous on your dogs I would thinks.

We've got a lot of yotes around here but they are really call shy. Too many people that don't know what they are doing out educating them. I think chasing them with dogs could be a lot of fun...

We use trail hounds but ours cant run them down in a foot race like a sight hound can. We have to tire them out my trailing them for long distances or hope the yote makes a mistake. Sometime we'll shoot them if need be.

This should give you good reading on the subject.

Thanks Nolte. We have way too many coyotes around here and they cut our bobcat tags down to 4. Theres plenty of coon to run too but I think yotes would be fun if you could do it with 2-3 dogs. Don't have room for more than that.

I run em with tree dogs, Blueticks, Plotts and Leapards. Seem to do ok, catch some and lose some. It is exceptionally good running and very addicting. It does take a few good runs before the dogs get in great shape, but once in good shape, the races can last for hours on end and take you to some crazy places. Nothin smarter than a coyote being chased in my opinion. It sure will show you what you have for dogs as far as endurance and track brains go. Beats the heck out of burning countles tanks of fuel looin for the right lion track. You can generally chose what kind of track you want to try in short order. Cold trail, smokin hot track or a double. Great sport this yote running. I highly reccomend it.

So how many dogs do you run in a pack? I'll have 2 for sure, possibly three. Is that enough? Or is it better to go with more?? I used to run lion with 2 but they didn't usually fight and if they did the dogs just bayed 'em up. Coyotes are tough critters and hell on the fight.

We run just trail hounds on coyotes. We just shoot them for the most part. 2 or 3 dogs is enough. Its hard to run big packs on coyotes because scenting conditions are more tough. We usaully just put 1 or 2 dogs out at a time and put fresh ones down when they cross roads and pick up the other dogs.

I'm guessing you didn't have many coyote killers in that bunch. I've seen but a dog or 2 that could consitantly kill a yote on it's own. But 2 seasoned good yote dogs can usually get one snuffed out if they can get at him. If it's a big dog yote, it might take 3 of them but they should be able to do it.

In reality it really doens't matter to me if they can stretch one. It's way more important that they can get actually catch one consistantly or run them real good. But if they do catch one they better stay there, I can't stand dogs that just peel at that point.

Hell, don't stop with just the curs. Shoot every breed & gender that was involved! Sorry I'm bored as hell and couldn't resist.

ya if they leave i will get ride of the dog the dog has to stay there thats a good dog to me and your right it doesnt matter how many dogs are there as long as they stay with the yote or stretch it i am happy with the dogs but most of the hounds we run this year are pups and just starting.

I had two hounds a running walker and a treeing walker, in the deep snow in vt especially wet snow the coyote was in trouble. Here the yotes will split up so no problem there. When the snow is not to deep you can have a long day and need more than a couple dogs to relay.

You dont have to worry too awful much about a coyote hurtin your dog. Your dogs will either be kill dogs and get the job done or just be bay dogs and the coyote will bay up like any other critter but may break when you go in to shoot it. Either way its fun.

If a dog leaves a coyote for any reason though, cull it cause it aint a coyote dog. Its more in line with a pen bred foxhound and alot of them just dont cut it. Some can do both though but they are worth their weight in gold in my opinion so you wont be gettin your hands on one of them too easy.

I agree, my little 42lb female walker had one bayed up in the middle of section by herself. The yote got sick of her and turned on her and ran her off a couple times. Everytime that yote stopped running her off, she turned around and stayed right with it. It must have taken us 45 minutes to get more dogs in to help her. Once reinforcements showed up the yote didn't make it 10 minutes. I don't expect her to stand and fight a yote by herself but she better stay with it, and she did.
