If I'm walking I use the underarmour stuff.......Isn't the best for like an all day sit on a deer stand but if you are moving through the day it works well....even works well if you are following the dogs; keeps moisture/sweat off ya so you don't freeze when you stop....

Look at Cabela's long johns. Thier thermastat is tops in durability and function. It comes in three different weights.

Smart wool, and under armor are about the best out there IMO. But both a bit spendy

I can't stand UA cold gear for hunting. I feel like I'm suck in a sausage casing and sweat like two rats F'in in a wool sock. They aren't that warm for sitting on a deer stand either.
I absolutely love UA heat gear loose for an under shirt, though. Best I've found. I have heard that their base layer series are real good for bottoms though.
For bottoms, I like the plain old Duofold polypro in extra long. Cheap and work pretty good.
I had some Cabelas silk top/bottoms and they worked great but didn't last long with tough use.

blackpaws : I can certainly appreciate the fact that Walmart stuff is the best you can afford . Been There Done That Put up with that

But by todays standards There best is still somewhat JUNK. Like I said in my opening post The older I get the COLDER I get . Having had a Heart Attack and a Stroke I still am NOT prepared to give up ALL my winter hunting adventures.Like Clint Eastwood said :" A mans got to know his limitations " My son and I are going to be doing a Wolf hunt in Alberta this coming winter . Northern Alberta can be cool in JAN.While my days of Keeping up with the likes of Mike L and you other young Bucks may be over . I just hate to be dropping the $$$ and not being comfortable doing it.

oh i agree. my dad has had cancer twice and his deer hunting out of a stand consists of if his coffe in his cup is cold it's time to get down and road hunt. he and the grandson go drive around eat doughnuts and road hunt.
it's hard to enjoy a hunt if you are shivering the whole time. Good luck up to the north on the wolves and kill as many as you can.

Funny story: I got this story from a friend of mine who may be one the greatest lion hunters left alive. I will not divulge his name for reasons you will see once I tell the story.
It seems he was on the trail of a large tom that had been causing some livestock problems and raising cain and being a pain in the butt so he was called upon to eleviate the problem. Well he was on foot and although there was some snow left in places the weather had really warmed up. His hounds went deep into the mountains and he relentlessly followed. He was dressed in usual cool weather fashion with long johns and sturdy wool pants over them which most woodsmen who spend great periods of time in the wilds have learned to depend upon. Well afternoon came and finally the dogs treed the cat and he came to the tree and dispatched it hastily, skinned it, and stuffed the hide in his pack and headed out. Well the day had grown very warm and he was sweating profusely so he decided he would remove the wool pants and just walk along with his long johns on. After all it wasn't like anybody was watching.Well after a time he was still overheating so he decided because these long johns had seen better days to go ahead and cut the legs out of them and make a pair of shorts out of them for real hiking comfort. This he did and on he went in breezy comfort but the sun's reflection off the snow and the high altitude played a trick on him. Here is a guy who's bare legs rarely if ever see the light of day so soon his lilly white legs were a bright pink with sunburn. The way out was further than he had anticipated and soon darkness fell. He found that the light he had packed was not working and he had no choice but to call his hounds around him and make a sort of camp for the night. Well as the sun faded over the horizan the chill returned he once again put on his wool pants and then it hit him. He could never stand wool against his bare skin anyway so he had always worn long johns but now that that same skin was burned raw from the sun he was tortured the moment he pulled them on. He built a small fire and tried to get by without the pants as long as he could but soon had to relent and put them on. He said it was the most miserable night he has ever spent in the woods. He still wears wool today but said he would never make that mistake again. LOL!
