I have been looking into changing dog food and I am getting info overload. Can you guys give me some brand names that have or do work good for your hounds? What is the right protien to fat % 's that a hard working dog needs? does anyone feed more than one food depending on age? Thanks

I tell you I have tried a lot of dog foods. There was a time I didn't pay for dog food, got it free, any kind you can imagine, had a relative that worked at a very prestigious feed store.

If you want to go the expensive route, Innova (EVO) Taste of the Wild, Natural Balance, and Canidae (sp?) All were great foods. I fed my dogs very minimal amounts, they had tons of energy, lean muscle, and shiny coats. I don't think there is an "appropriate amount" of protien to fat ratio. Whatever works for that dog depending on the weather and exercise it gets. If you're not feeding a ton, no loose stool, good muscle and coat, then you should be fine.

That said I think that since I've been buying foods the best for the money have been Science Diet, IAMS, Diamond Naturals, and Exceed.

I think hands down Diamond Naturals Chicken and Rice is best, or Extreme Athlete.

I wouldn't touch any other Diamond product. Black Gold, Purina, Pedigree, Ol Roy, I wouldn't recommend either.

Right now I am feeding Science Diet as I can get it for $27 for 40lb. I can get The Diamond Naturals for $24 for a 40lb, and plan to go back to it if the price goes back up on the other.

the fat content is more important to me than the protein. If it has corn as a filler then it is all pretty much the same IMO. ARKAT dog food is worth looking into, I am in the process of doing that right now.
