Never tried 'em, but I just wouldn't think they would be warm enough in a Northern state during the winter......

I have barrel houses buried in the side of a mountain with only the door end sticking out. I stuff em with straw and cover the door hole with a rubber flap. It must be warm in there cause they don"t come out if its very cold at all.

Another way to make them warmer is to put dirt in the bottom of the barrels and then straw or grass hay on top. I use this method in camp and it works real well.

Barrels buried in dirt are about as good insulated as you can get. warm in winter and cool in summer. They last forever too
