how big does everyone guess this cat to be by its track?



we found it this past season. tried running it. utah got it jumped but lost it in a bunch of coyote tracks. im guessing over 40 lbs

i took that picture with my cell before he was jumped

I could never judge the weight of a cat by it's track, but it's a biggun!

Hey probably stupid question but do you have lynxs up your way, around the perimeter of the actual toe's and pad part of the
track it seems like something I have not seen in bobcats tracks before, ( but then again I just got educated on the three lobes
that all cats have ) just thought it may be a well furred up lynx track maybe,
unless you blew out the fluff/snow in the track and that is what created that look, either way it is a dandy and hope you catch it
someday so we can see that bigboy

I go by my snoose can lid. If its that big, it's a good one.

If you put a lynx track next to it you would see a big difference, not sure if you can google up a lynx track in the snow or not, but that would be a good way to see the difference and compare the two. One way to describe it would be to take a pop can, push it down on the snow, and get a house cat to step in the middle of it, that kinda gives you an idea, but might not be the best example, just what came to mind.

jeff yup, there are lynx in maine and vermont-
i saw my first lynx track bout ten years ago - pretty common in some area here now
looks a little bit fuzzy to me too -looks too big for even a 40 lb bobcat
based on just one picture of one track ,-im not gonna speculate any more than that

most the time -- a lynx track is pretty obvious - larry gave good description of most ive seen -


yearling bear size - 3 1/2 - 4 1/2 inches

they can get on top of snow about as good as a hare can


in some snow conditions-its not so obvious -- hard to tell what is toes and heel pad and whats hair

i saw one that i never did make up my mind-

walked it quite aways - never could see it clearly --

too big for bobcat --sinkng too much for lynx - never turned loose -i still wished i had but its a serious no no to run lynx here even by accident

im no expert on lynx tracks
ive only seen a picture of a lynxs foot -ive only seen one live lynx

last few years ,, ive seen quite a few lynx tracks , i think ive seen some big bobcats that didnt have all that much bigger track than average

I have a few other pics ill post tonight of the same cat. I have seen a few lynx tracks myself and believe this is a bobcat. I haven't seen a lynx track in our area at all. The only lynx I've seen have been far north but the possibility is there. There was a hard crust that day with an inch or two of new snow on top. He's big whatever it is.

i saw a big cat tarck up near the Hight of the land last Feb.. must be a lynx or a mt lion.

Haha. I still haven't loaded the other pictures of the track. He's big though. I'm guessing 40 to 45 lbs. We only found his track that once this past season. Coyotes messed my dog all up and we lost the track. Next seasons going to be a different story. We found a lynx track up past greenville this past season. They are around for sure. Plenty of fishers and mallards round here too haha.
