hi, my hound ripped out a toenail Saturday while running a coyote. the whole nail is gone just a red nubblin left there on the end of the toe, she walks on it but it does obviously hurt her when she stubs it on anything. wasnt bleeding, just looks tender. i was wondering how long in took for a nail to grow back? i didnt think she needed a vet so i rinsed it and put antibiotics on it................. thanks

I had a similar thing happen to one of my hounds. The dog kept licking at it, and I had to keep applying iodine and anti-biotics. For about three weeks, it was obvious that it was still sore. After about a month she finally started to put her weight back on it to the point she would run on it. It's been about three or four months now, and the new nail has finally broken through. She doesn't favor it at all. I had to help keep it clean for about the first two or three weeks. It didn't seem to ever have any issues with infection. It just took time to heal.

one thing to watch for with iodine is that unless diluted enough it can cause raw tissue to blister actually causing more damage. so use with some caution.

Clean it good and then apply some super glue to it.

spray some antiboitic/antifungal (like dr naylor blu-kote) on it and move on. had plenty of dogs pull a toenail, Never had it stop me from running the next day or stop running in the chase they were in, If the dog is worth a grain of sand they will have the desire to get to a chase or run a piece of game they smell. i also run my dogs when they are sore and tender, as long as their is physical swelling in the joint or body part, such as the foot, they dont get to stay home. They dont seem to complain either, JMO

Perk, that is good advice. Never "doctored" one yet, just kept on hunting them, and never had any further problem.
