Hey brothers, I'm full time retired veteran now. I now have time to invest in houndin. Can someone help me build a team of winners from scratch. I was thinking blueticks and the cameron line has the best marketing name. I live near Salem, Oregon. I need advice please.

Have you ever run hounds?

Yes I grew up coon hunting in Indiana. We ran black and tans and walkers. I came to oregon in 1993. I was building a team of plotts at the time and our lovely state of oregon voted me out of the bear hunting business. I've hunted with guides out of state here and there but that gets real expensive. Now, I have more time to train and travel out of state. I feel very much like a rookie hunter here in the mountains. But that doesn't seem to discourage me. I just need some help getting back into the game and learning the right way to do things out west.

If my pack got whiped out today and I had to start all over, I wouldn't worry about what breed of dogs they are. I would try to find a decent older dog that has some experience and a started dog. There gonna be more money than pups but it gives you something to start with.

When I first started I took every dog I could get my hands on. Most of them couldn't catch game if it crawled in their dog house. I had to buy dogs with some experience. If someone is giving a dog away you probably don't want it.

Once you are catching then you can start getting pups and start working towards the breed you preffer. I would buy dogs from the area you plan to hunt. It isn't the cheapest way to go but it may save some headaches and disapointment.

I enjoyed hound hunting, but got hooked once I had dogs that could actually catch something. There are alot of opinions on this site, but this is what worked for me.

Thanks for the advise. I agree with what you are saying. One thing is my goal with hounds is to build up a brand of dogs that can be trusted and marketed. Not just put animals in trees. I want to start with the best stock available. Del Cameron has a good name in the business and the dogs are designed for big game and mountains. I would love to buy a rock solid finished Cameron Bluetick if I could find a proven and trusted source. And a started one too. I'm with you on that. Let me know where to go for those two if you know. Those are hard to find. I know I may have to get non-cameron experienced hounds if I can't locate what I want. I can work in both directions with the pups and hunting now at the same time, but I'm focused on my end goal. Thanks so much for your words.
