Well, it's finally been done. Since the DWR started issuing a bear tag that included the Cache unit nearly 10 years ago, a bear was finally taken. As far as I know, this is the first bear legally taken by a sportsman since Dalt Reid killed one up Blacksmith Fork Canyon in the 1930's.

This is not just any bear either, it measured just under 7 feet in length and the skull green scored at exactly 22 inches, easily qualifying it for Pope and Young. Congrats to Rob and all those that participated in the hunt for doing what hasn't been done in nearly 80 years! :)

Congrats on the big 'ol bear. Best part about this pic is the youngster, way to get him involved early.

Kevin,
Thanks for the picture. I'd sure like to hear the story too, if we knew who could tell it. Utah may not have many bears, but we darn sure have some pretty colors, and some of them get some size on them too. By the way, I wonder where the current #1 B&C bear was found? Hmmmmmmmmm.... Makes ya wonder..

The group looks like it has a lot of fun folks to spend the day with. I like the young kid there with a hound under his arm. Lucky kid..

I know you may not know Kevin, or be able to find this out, but I sure woud be interested to know how old they think he is and about what he weighed when they got him on the ground.. Thanks Again Kevin.. KattSkatt

Thats a bruiser for sure. He's got an ear tag so you should be able to find some history on him

Alright KattMann,
I suggest you check your FaxxMann.. ain't no bears in these here parts.. You should already know that based upon your limited experience with the humble little valley that you called home for a short time.. Then you stepped way up in the world and made your way to the Basin..

By the way, I surely do miss that old Luke dog.. Man he was sure good to have around.. Thanks for sharing him with me. Lotta good memories with me and that old dog.. Sounds like you are doing alright over there, and giving the backhoe and truck a rest once in awhile huh? At least enough to get on the mountain and rig lions once in awhile.. If I knew how to move one of them smiley faces with the winking eye over here I would put it right about here XXXX.... KattKrapp..

I don't know if I can tell the story of this bear without breaking down into tears, the pain is still too fresh.

You see, I was on the computer Saturday morning quibbling with the Ikester about rigging lions and disciplining box babbling mutts when the call came in that somebody had just seen a bear run across the highway near the Franklin Basin turn off. My phone was on the jack in my truck and, of course, the jackals I hunt with never bothered to stop by my house to rouse me off my computer. So no, I missed out on the whole event. :x

I guess this bear took them up the shady side of the canyon and onto Peter Sinks where the snow is still 5 feet deep. Again the voicemails to my phone to " GRAB SOME SLEDS AND GET YOUR ASS UP HERE!!" went unnoticed. Eventually the bear bayed up at the base of a brushy spruce tree where the hunter was able to sneak in and close the deal.

Best guess is that the bear would have weighed in the 400 lbs. range. It hadn't completely purged it's digestive system since emerging from it's den but it still had layers of fat 3 inches in places, so it was packing some pretty good weight for this time of year. The teeth were still long and relatively white so while the bear was well matured, he wasn't ancient.

The tag in it's ear was from the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, so that is where he must have originated (the Idaho border is only about 5 miles away from where they started the race). Still, they don't have a lot of bear on the Idaho side of the mountain range either, and I thought that most of the bear we have on the Cache migrated in from the south. So it will be interesting to learn more from that tag in it's ear.

Anyway, another picture:

Geez, I'm beginning to feel like Ike for continuing to post after myself on this thread.

I did, however, hear some additional information based on the bear's ear tag I thought was interesting.

This bear was apparently tranquilized and tagged in the Mountains just east of Pocatello, Idaho in 2007. He was released in the Tin Cup/Diamond Creek area near Wayan, which is roughly 100 miles north from where he was eventually taken. Somehow, this bear would have had to cross the Bear River. Just where this bear crossed is a mystery to me because of developement and human activity, there is no logical corridor. The most direct route would have been to cross through the open valley and farm fields near Soda Springs, or perhaps he took the longer route through Lava Hot Springs and crossed near the Onieda Narrows........neither of which one would consider prime bear habitat.

The one thing we know for certain on this bear is that he was well travelled.
