There's lots of really good information in the training tips section.

Your best bet is to get a dog that hunts they way you want, whether you buddy up with a friend who has that dog and tag along with him or you flat out buy a dog like that it will greatly help you. Dogs learn a lot from eachother.

training a hound from the ground up is a undertaking that many start and damn few finish. the upside is if your stubborn enough to get it done your probably going to end up a houndsmen. the best thing you can do is focus on the basics and get a few good books that can give you some insight into the game and there are some out there. i will tell you from personal experience it is worth the effort to avoid training by yourself. a decent hound will save you a year of training on a pup and a good hound will save you two years. by the time a human with their limited talents for trailing game has shown a dog enough game of the right type he'll be three years old. unless you have good snow conditions and follow every track to it's end and walk yourself to death.
even using training scents correctly can be confusing to beginners and can cause trailing problems in your hound your not aware of. find a hunter in your area and ride along untill you get some understanding of these basic issues
