So I have a question for all you bear huntin fools. What do you guys do when your just pursuing bears and you have one that wont tree do you just wait for the dogs to pull back or do you catch up to them and start pullin dogs off.

Do what you can to get your dogs without getting them hurt, I use the tone on my trash braker and get as close as I can, and try not to give my dogs the courage to get them selves hurt.

My dogs are more aware of where I am and what I am doing than you might think. They know if I am walking away from them rather than walking in to them, and I usually shout to them once in awhile to make sure they know which direction I am heading. They won't quit a bear if we are just starting out, but if the bear has been refusing to tree for hours and I start heading back to the truck, they often do too. Of course, that is risky to them--it could turn and shred them at any time.

Around here we have quite a few roads so when they cross we catch as many as we can. By the next few roads we will have them all caught up.

Well it all depends on how close the dogs bay. With dogs that stay back a bit, you can gather them up on a trail or if it's stopped, slink in and grab em. With ones that really like to get tight, it gets a bit trickier. With those types, you've got to get close and grab them without busting the bear out. The worst part is most dogs that have done this a bit get sneaky and know you're trying to catch them. So basically you're trying to not spook a bear AND catch a dog that doesn't want to be caught. And most times you're in the thickest, most wicked brush you can find. The best method on this is to get a coordinated 2-man team and try to push the bear towards where guy #2 is waiting to snag the dog.

My best advice is to catch the tightest baying dog first. The rest come much easier after that. It also helps if dogs and bear a bit wore out. At times you can also try to get in front of the bear and hide behind a tree that it will walk directly by, as soon as the bear goes by grab the dog. It sounds dumb, but it's worked for me. Get real good at tackling.

I just call'em off and they all come arunnin! Then if I need the bear again I just send'em back! I'm gonna do a video on those methods if I ever get another bear that won't climb....

I would sure as hell like to see something like that....you can just holler your dogs off game when their right in its face? I'm not sure if I would consider that a good thing or a bad thing... but if your puttin game up and your dogs listen that well, I suppose more power to ya....

I would definitely like to see that video. How do you train your dogs to do that? I can usually go from the tree to the truck without using leashes however I have zero success doing that with a bayed bear.

we have several walkin mean bears here. if it is trainin season we pretty much just pick and choose a good spot to yoke one or also use one of us as a decoy and always always have a good trusty knife handy if things go south. during kill season we just wade in amongst them and do the deed at point blank range. all my dogs bay extremely close or stay in almost constant contact. we have been slapped charged chased you name it. the worst is a treed bear that comes down head first with you standin at the base of the tree with dogs. i would also lke to see the holler and leave method

sorry i missed the part only trainin. i'm sure with a firearm we all have the same method.

Walking bears or mean ass bears that wont tree is a whole lot of difference to me most bear I walk do tree eventually it night take ten to twenty hour to tree eventually they will tree a fighting bear that walks trees for a few min and bales can usually be Treed as well in the right situation it depends alot on the dogs but when my dogs wont quit after ten or eleven hours im wishing they were cowards and quit I have very rarely seen a bear that wont tree ( since ive had real good dogs ) and the rare occasion that the bear wont tree is a bear in the desert were there are no trees

i've talked to several western hunters and from what i've gathered we have a diff kinda mean

What is diff kinda mean bears that kill dogs gut them bite them run them down and law them open or mall the hell outa them ive even had them ambush the dogs they are all the same the terrain or thickness might be the diff though

I got to disagree with you on this. I've seen lots of bear in WI that won't tree. And we are covered in trees. Some are just plain miserable. They might be 150lbs or 400lbs. There are only 3 ways to end the deal, dead bear, dead dogs or pull them off.

Now I'm sure some on here are thinking, this guy needs some REAL dog power. Damn right I do at times, but that truck full of WWW rock stars is never around when I need it. I sure wish it was though. If nothing else, at least we could go to the vet together.

I Guess I worded that post wrong what I mean is I have had the meanest bear tree but that dont mean it stays Treed they will tree for a minute or two long enough to get rest come back down either to run or fight again if your lucky enough to run in when it does go up sometimes you can help keep it up im sure we have bear just as mean as your bear maybe not as many
