I have 4 dogs and was thinking about running bear with two of my bogs. Which both pretty good size dogs. Would this be to risky to just run two dogs? The other two I have one is a pup almost 7 months old and the other I just want to put her in cats. Any info would be greatly appreciated thanks

I've been catching bears with two dogs but some bears need a little extra preassure.

I heard of a guy that would put out his minature poodle on a sighted bear. Some bears would pop up so it was a treeing poodle. It got eaten by a wolf. The End.

I agree with Ike, tear it up with whatever you got. I have had young dogs get boogered a bit by a ground fighting bear, but a few trips back out to boost the confidence and they would be right back in there. no harm done.

Go down a few posts and you'll find a large thread titled how many dogs on bear? Something like that.

Your almost seven month old is too young for bears.

at 6 0r seven months you d better be doing something with them cause those are the key months from what ive seen where the lights come on for most pups . of course there are later starters and earlier starters than that.dont miss out on their learning curve . im not saying throw them in there with the baddest bear in the country either.

I've always thought that 2 maybe 3 is all you need on any lower 48 game, too many dogs creates vet bills.Thats my opinion anyway.

Thanks for the info from everyone. All my dogs are started out on bobcat. I don't wanna run my pup on bear cuz she is doing really well on bobcat sent. I just want run bear when and if i have time off running cats. I didn't know if two dogs was good ebough. My main goal is to run lion and bobcats lol.

The body developes faster than the brain....and that goes for hounds as well :D
Just because he looks big enough don't think he's 100% wired.

I like 7-8 months on the pup before I hunt him but again it depends on the hound. After that get him out there with a few good finished dogs and he should be fine.

You could hunt him earlier than 7 months but I like to spend that time working on handling, scent training, handling, letting him be a pup, handling and getting his feet under him. Did I mention handling.. Getting him in the woods and use to all kinds of conditions is time well spent the first several months.

Handling becomes a bigger factor with the less dogs you run in my opinion 8)

I have saw more bears hunting behind a single three legged fat out of shape female Kemmer...... period. That's not a joke either. She has since passed on. In her later years I would carry her out of the woods because she didn't have the energy any more. She would be hopping beside you one minute and barking treed the next and if she was barking you could take it to the bank there was a bear in the tree. It doesn't matter if you have 100 dogs it only takes 1 BEAR dog to tree bears. That being said if you hunt every day 1 dog isn't going to cut it. That's why some people have many dogs. I don't keep more than six grown dogs and I train in pairs. (now) I like to hunt 4 dogs at a time because 90% of my hunting is done on boot leather. I HATE to lead dogs so I free hunt my dogs. If I have more than that there's lolly gagging and then they don't tend to stay together as well. I'm no expert and I wouldn't call my pack BEAR dogs but, they tree enough to keep me happy and excited about going.

two will do the trick most of the time but you find your self wanting more after a dog get hurt and cant hunt for a few days or you get on a bear wearing nikes.

Yes, her name was Prowler. She came from N.C. so you may have been her first owner.
