I am considering buying a pup from a brother and sister mating. I like the bloodlines, but am not sure what to expect being this tight. Will the dog be retarded and unmanageable or super intense hard hunting. I am really on the fence with this one, any suggestions would be appreicated

intensive line breeding brings out the good as well as the bad. as long as they are nice dogs with no hidden recesive traits that are undesireable you should be ok. i have had two dog out of full littermates and several out of half brother sister crosses

@ 7 months to 1 year will be able to tell if the BAD reccesive Bugs are going to bite you!

After that there are some subtle things that the reccessive gene bugaboo could cause to crop up!

Taking all the Bad possibilities with the Chances that none will show up and all the GOOD traits will be expressed....it is DARN sure worth a try!

In 50 years Dad has done this three times....the first time results not so good...the last two times, 0 idiots, all Pups made Hounds worth Feeding.

Depends some on how tight parents are bred. If the potential parents are out of a previous brother/sister mating, chances of problems increases. If the potential parents are out of unrelated or distantly related dogs, chances of problems much less. Personally, if I had the money and liked the breeding, I'd give it a shot.

This is a cross I had contemplated with two littermates that are out of a 1/2 bro 1/2 sis cross to begin with. I never have done it, just curious. If the pups hunted like their parents, I would be happy.

I don't know if I'm looking at this right or not:

If make an out cross, I try to consider what the blend would be like. I still have to really like both dogs, and both parents have to be successful at catching game, but I might be trying to improve on something, or lean a direction that one of the parents already is.

If I made this full Brother X Sister cross, I feel like I better be right where I want to be with the parents. I better be happy if I esentially ended up with clones of the parents.

Maybe I'm looking at this wrong. Maybe through doing this the pups might be better than the parents, but I have not done this yet, so its all speculation on my part.

I played around with line breeding once. I took a jack russel and bred it. I took a female pup and bred it back to dad. Did this three times. The last litter everyone looked like a clone of their mother. Super nice dogs. I still have one female. She just turned 10. Best dog I ever had.

I have always heard mom to son is ok dad to daughter is ok but no breedin brother and sister. I have bred mom to grandson with great results and nothing closer than that so far.

From what I have read and seen when line and inbeeding. One should forget family relationship and study more on the two dogs that are too be bred. Make sure the sire is prepotent fore the traits one is looking for. The same goes for the dam.
When family breeding you could breed two cousins togeter and end up with closer family breeding than a brother , sister cross(Genetically). So I don't look as closely to family relationship as I do to the background and abillity of the dogs to be bred.
I don't know if that makes any sense to anyone else, but I works in my feeble mind. Try reading any Al Lynn, Richard Mc Duffie, Bill Brewbaker or Guy Ormiston for a better insite into the do's and dont's of family breeding.

What determines the breedability??? how could two cousins be genetically closer that brother and sister????

Half of of the pups genes come from the father and half from the mother so depending on how everything lines up when the pup is conceived, a cousin of the pup could carry closer genetic makeup than a littermate. Because that pups aunt and uncle carry the same genetic makeup.

Sorry I missed the part about Breedability, Or prepotency, to test, breed sire or dam to thier offspring that shows the desirable traits, and the resuslting litter should most resemble the older parent of the litter thus showing if the sire or dam is capable of reproducing thier own family line. I know this is alot of time and work for most breeders, but remember we are talking about inbreeding or line breeding...Steve...
