so my pup is 6 months old but is not aggressive towards a caged coon unless it is hissing and charging at him, as soon as it stops moving he's off to smell the roses or look for food. he ran a coon the 4th of july for over 3/4 of a mile opened on the track for the first time, he did great trailing in the mid day heat, but as soon as he caught up to it and it hunkered under some limbs on the ground he was bored, i even sent in the wifes 10 month old weimeraner who jumped right on it. will it just take some time and more exposure to game to get him going? i was super impressed on his trailing and how he opened especially since that was the first live animal he's got to trail, plus we are both rookies and dont have an experienced dog to follow.

Sounds like he is doing fine, keep in mind that he is 6 months old and keep doing what you are doing and one day soon the "switch" will just go off and he will be all over that coon!

Jeremy fallow tomjr advise if he is opening on track at 6 months that is pretty good. when ever he looses interest just lead him away and put him up for the day one day things will klick. later, Andy

one month can make a total difference dont get impatient with your pup they can go from dud to stud in that time . dont let him get bored with over training him like the others suggested.

So you want to see your pup fight the coon?

does he get to win play fighting with the other dog?

Some things that build confidence in fighting are tug of war games with your pup.
Old T-shirts are great, I think they like the tearing noise, towels and stuffed toys get down there with him and show him how much fun it can be to tear things up and how much you like it.

and yes I'm serious, if you don't believe me get a book on training attack dogs

build confidence
show him you like it
good luck

took him out yesterday, he seems to have a lot of fun trailing the coon, sounds awesome(like a teenager with a squekie voice) when he is opening on trail. still not much on baying or getting in there and pulling hair but i am old enough now to listen to advice and will listen to all of your advice and be patient. i dont really care if he wants to jump right in and rip everything up but just baying at something when its backed into a corner would be nice, i know BE PATIENT

MY friend had a dog that did not show interest at all. One day we had a coon bayed up. The dog was hanging around not doing much of anything. Wandered over a little close and the coon came out and grabbed him. Coon must have grabbed him fight on his switch cause he snapped and was a coon killer ever since. He would jump up and grab them off of the sides of trees on their way down after that. Just be patient itll come.

Take your time. Keep in mind, it will take years and lots of hunting before you have a broke dog you can trust. A lot of people don't even start their dogs until they are a year old. Let him be a puppy.

On his best and worst day he is just a dog.

Some really great big game dogs get bored with coons. I was wondering do any of these "problem" dogs get a chance to hunt big game. They might be bored with coons. Like I got after I was introduced to big game hunting. Like the hound above that was grabbed by a coon and then it was interesting. I think a hound gets bored if it is not a dangerous game. Just my thoughts.

I do all of my culling between 6 mo to one year. that dog would fall into the cull pile at my house, just cuz I don't have the patiance to try to instill something in them that is born into others from day one. I'm not telling you to cull it, cuz it's probably going to be a great dog someday. the only dog I ever kept around that was like that was my "Bandit" dog. he wouldn't even do the things you said your pup is doing right. he never liked to leave my side and the only reason I didn't get rid of him was that I loved his coloring. (stupid reason) one day when he was about 8 months old I was dry casting on my horse. the dogs blew out on a chase, all exept bandit. he stayed with me and we happened onto a bobcat in a trap. he ran up and took a sniff and when the cat blew up at him he yelped and ran all the way to the truck. I made up my mind right there I was going to cull him, but never got around to it. at about 1 1/2 years old I walked out one day to find my lead male dead in the kennel. don't know why he died, but a week later we were hunting lions on some of the worst conditions ever!!!! bandit had seen a few lion trees at this point and was starting to show minimal interest in them. I turned out on a two day old lion track in mostly frozen dirt and a little patchy snow. I only put out my two best dogs and I let bandit out too figuring that he would be good company on this long hike. as soon as the other two dogs started the track bandit had his nose to the ground and was pounding that track as hard as I have ever seen a dog do. we eventually treed that lion and I learned on that cat that bandit could smell the track when the other two couldn't and if not for him I don't think it would have treed. also when I got to the tree he was treeing as good as I've ever seen a dog tree. I don't know what happened with the passing of my "spot" dog, but from that day on bandit has been my lead dog? he is in almost every picture I have ever posted on here. makes me wonder how many of them culls could have made leads some day. so don't give up if you are persistant, he could be a lead dog someday. as for me I will still keep pickin the early starters I am spoiled rotten when it comes to that.

Go back up top to "huntwithkids" post...............if and when that happens and the pup still shows little or no interest, then go to "houndenem"'s post and consider his reccomendation.

If the coon grabs ahold of your pup and your pup takes "offense" to it like he is bred to do, I suspect the next time you train him he runs that track with a little more emphasis and desire.
