Coast-The fell hound is a foxhound from England used to run in the big packs. I'm not sure but they usally come with a coat. They have a rep of being a harder fox hound and some that ride in the USA to packs use them for coyotes. With that being said you could get more from a good running walker or July foxhound imo.

is that the hound that runs slower but they say it can run so much longer and can track so much better that it makes up for it? cause i heard some guys talking about some hounds from england sat night at the pen.

Fell hounds are hounds used to hunt fox in the fells (mountains). Because of the country they are mostly hunted on foot as opposed to the packs that are followed on horseback.

This site has more information and pictures:

Here's another good site with lots of stories and pictures of hunting in the fells:

I don't want to answer for crch, but my opinion is because a lot of top houndsmen have found great success in it. Many on this site have tree/running dog crosses. Some of the best houndsmen in Cali use these crosses... Sonny Turner, George Baker, Art Pinole, Jack Hall, Travis Hunter, etc.

some of the reason i like to cross running dogs with treeing dogs . treeing dogs for the most part tend to stand on there head , not all of them but the majority. treeing dogs tend to hang up and false tree in the country i hunt .big timber with bluffs and wind falls. not all of them but alot. the running dog is running to catch the game . throw some treeing dog into them and they will tree. half and half is ok but i would prefer a quarter running and three quarter treeing. this is what i like . not every pup will locate and tree out of a litter but when you get the right pup that has the best traits from both sides they are dam good dogs.

I DON'T KNOW WHAT KIND OF DOGS YOUR TALKING ABOUT THAT STAND ON THERE HEAD OR HANG UP OR FALSE TREE. BUT IF I HAD THEM I WOULD SWITCH DOGS. THE DOGS THAT I RUN ALL RUN TO CATCH AND THEN KNOW WHAT TO DO WHEN THEY GET THERE SO ITS POSSIBLE YOU HAVE THE WRONG KIND OF TREE DOG, IF YOU HAVE TO BREED CATCH INTO THEM.
I'M NOT SAYING THAT YOU CAN'T GET LUCKY AND END UP WITH A TREE DOG THAT HAS RUNNING DOG IN HIM BECAUSE THE RUNNIG DOG PEOPLE GET THEM EVERY ONCE IN WHILE BUT THEY CULL THEM AND YOUR PERCENTAGES JUST ARE NOT THERE. TO GET YOUR TREE IN THEM.

I HAVE HUNTED TO DIFFERENT LINES THAT WERE FOR REAL ONE WAS THE OLD BAWLIE STOCK FROM THE UPPER PENNISULA CAME OUT OF SOME DOGS FROM TENNESEE ERNIE FORDS KENNEL THEY WERE EXCELLENT CATCH DOGS AND TREE DOGS. BUT PREDOMINATLEY BEAR DOG STOCK.
THE OTHER LINE I REALLY LIKED WERE FROM AL RENICKS DOGS // BARRICK STOCK THEY ARE DOGS THAT CAN PUSH A TRACK AND THEN HAVE THE BRAINS TO TREE IT THESE DOGS WILL MOST EVERY TIME HAVE THE GAME LOCATED IN THE TREE BEFORE YOU DO,
THEY TREE BY WINDING MORE TIMES THEN NOT YOU CAN WALK THREW RIVERBOTTOMS AND THE DOGS WILL FALL TREED RIGHT BESIDE YOU AND THE OTHER DOGS DON'T EVEN KNOW ITS THERE I HAVE RUN FOX, AND CAT WITH THEM AND THEY JUST SUIT ME.

My pressure dogs have almost all got a bit of Fell Hound in them somewhere. They normally waiting at the tree for a good while before my cold nosed hounds ( cat hounds ) get there. We run a mixed pack as I have said before and dont find that many of my pressure dogs that are not hard on the tree.

I cant say it comes as naturally to them as a true tree hound but I believe through years of selectively breeding them apart we've managed to get a high percentage that are treeing as well as any of our tree hounds ( cat hounds ) and like I said they could sometimes take a nap before the cold trailers get there.

Could I use just my pressure dogs with confidence - answer is absolutely yes.But I do prefer the mixed pack. Ask me on kill percentages between a pressure dog team and a cat hound team - depends where and what you're hunting. If you looking at a mixed bag of jackal or lynx in my country - being the East Cape , I'll cast in favour of the pressure dogs.

In my country I believe they will probably outperform true cat hounds from start to finnish on cat. Being generally hotter nosed if they pick up a cat it's normally the short end of the trail and they get onto them harder. Cold nosed hounds will have a higher strike percentage but on there own are not going to finnish with as many kills.

Roy Sparks.

that is exactly my thnking as well thanks for describing whats in my little brain. how cold nosed are they , do you let them cold trail with the trail hounds or do you turn them in once the track warms up.
