depends on what you mean.
if you mean what is running dogs? it is letting dogs chase game.
if you mean what are running dogs? for most guys here it is a nontreeing scent trailing dog. for others it is real running dogs or sighthounds that catch game primarily by speed and little to no scenting.

You are right Pops. I feel that in the context of hounds discuss here it means hound that were originally bred and used for fox and then coyote. These dogs were bred not to tree the ones that treed were culled. These culls part of what were made into treeing walkers and our big game and varmint dogs. Dewey

I am still dont understand what your getting at but some people go to feild trials and run their hounds against other peoples hounds some lay sent drags and run their hounds on thoseyou can find out about that in the training section some road their hounds in front of their pickup to keep them in shape as long as you are out with your hounds you are running your hounds maybe that is what your looking for still not sure

Grouse: Perhaps I should have CHOSEN my words better .Only in the context of Bear in northern Maine . we have 5 or 6 guys with there own packs that we hunt with regularly.one of the guys is absolutely dedicated to Plotts . If as example someone gave him a $10,000.00 World champion Walker he would say Thanks but no Thanks he will stick with his blood-lines . Another guy has always been a walker Man . Heck of a nice guy always the first to help out but I have never seen anyone cull their dogs like he does always commenting how worthless his walkers are.He WILL let them make 1 mistake but if the mistake is repeated the hound is disposed of. Most of the other guys are actually running mixed packs of hounds To each their own .Red dogs , Blue dogs , Heinz 57 variety etc; I would rather judge each hound individually as opposed to saying one breed is better than another .Why do we all pick different wives or girlfriends .I guess whatever tickles your fancy. Personally I would like to end up with a mix of Blue , English Lightfoot and Majestic from the right bloodlines .but that is just MY preference. Perhaps you could send me a PM with the correct 7 numbers and make my dreams com true.

Bob , i understand what you mean , i think certain breeds work better in different situations . As far as bear i've never hunted them with a dog so i personally don't know what you would need to make a bear dog . I was more or less just busting your chops cause i'm a walker man . If i ever figure out a way to find those magic numbers , i'll get you a top notch walker dog

The way I take the question the answer would be, when we have hounds that we use to hunt we refer to it as "I run hounds" or " I'm running hounds". or maybe he is refering to when people run them to get them in shape. that could be "running hounds". Mybe I'm way off here, hope it helps.
