i just got a new dog. she is a 6 month old walker/everythinginbetween..and she is a good looking dog. but she is very shy. she is coming out of it. but when new people come up to her. or new dogs come around her she gets very nervous. i was wondering if there is anything i can do to help her get used to everyone/thing faster.ALSO. she hasnt really shown and intrest in hunting. i brought her around a couple house cats and she didnt bark or anything just ran away. i was wondering if there is anything i can do to get her to chase the cats and start on bear and lions n bobbies.

thanks for any help.

give her a bit to calm down. sometimes even trained hounds don't feel comfortable enough with a new owner to hunt for a period.

My "Hook" dog was a little shy as a pup, it seems to be common in females that didn't get around too many big dogs and people as a young pup. I always just take it real easy on them and don't push the shy ones too hard. if your intent not to cull her then just get her around as many dogs and people as possable and love on her alot. by the way hook turned out to be the best dog I have ever owned at a pretty young age. she just kinda snapped out of it. I make sure that my newborn pups are in the kennel with the big dogs from day one now and my kids go maul them every night. This has helped cure the problem before it starts. good luck and keep us posted.

If your sure you want to keep working with her, you may need to move her in the house with you and the kids, if you can. With a pup that shy at that age it's probably a confidence thing and getting used to her surroundings.

my dog is way better already.when i walk up to her dog house she runs to me. i take her for walks behind my place to see if she can sniff out my cat or anything. she works with her head down the whole time.

My Plott bitch is a shy one, i have to spend time with her 3 times a week and she is fine. If i just feed her for a week, she gets shy again, BUT she is smart and listens great, i am thinking of getting her a boyfriend this fall and run some cats i hope..

Best medecine is socialation just keep introducing her to as many new people, dogs and situations you can. But the sad truth is some never come out of thier shell, most do though. I had a leapord cur she was beautiful and smart you'd think she was about to come around but just never turned the corner. She use to come to me tentively but would usually come, anyway long story short. I decided to take her hunting with the other dogs because I thought maybe that would help, never saw her again. Left food a coat and went back 3 times a day for the next several weeks never saw hide nor hair of her. :(
