How cold of noses do mike kemps dogs have I. Have one now and he is doing real well running and treeing and got another on the way

It depends on the dog. I have a few buddies that have a couple that turned out to be medium nose rig dogs. And then I know of some that won't even acknowledge a track unless it is red hot. But I think you will find that in a lot of breeds. I also believe it is how you raise them. If all you do is put them on red hot tracks they will not learn to cold trail. So they will pass up a lot of tracks that some other dog could straighten out and catch.

I have a question of both of you. Tink you say you have one of Mike's dogs and he is doing ok. And BBGH you said that one of your friends has a Mike dog and he does not open unless the track is red hot as I recall.

I was wondering how many of Mike's dogs do not open unless the track is red hot. The reason for my question is you can go to Mike's site and he has a video showing the difference between his style of dog and tree dogs. He has two tree dogs and 6 or more of his young dogs up to 18 months of age. Now I watched the video and only one of Mike's dogs opens on the track. Mike's dogs of course goes off and leaves the other two dogs behind with their speed and they all tree. But only one dog opens out of the 6 plus dogs he has out out of his line. Now they are young but watching the video none of them seem to have any problems running the track....

I am not trying to put down anyone's dogs in fact I was thinking of buying a dog from Mike but if their style is to be semi silent for lack of a better word until the track is hot then I may not be interested.

Is this trait in his line of dogs? Can anyone answer?

I had one a few years back and I got rid of him because he could not cold trail.

I am no expert on Kemp dogs but I have hunted with a few. The ones I have been around have been a little tighter mouthed than what I am use to. The two I have been around the most are top notch dogs. They can flat smoke a good track. I wouldn't call them super cold nosed, but they do have the ability to move old tracks. I think their cold trailing ability for cat hunting is just about right. They can cold trail but are not going to spend all day trailing an animal that is three states away when you turn out. They do open when cold trailing, they just don't babble the whole time.

If there is one thing that I personally don't like is the fact the dogs are super fast on track and when picking up a lose they don't bark a lot so the other dogs may not get with them. They are excellent track driving machines that do just fine at the tree. They have the desire to search the country side to find the track. The dogs I have are not exactly slouches, but they have a heck of a time trying to keep up with the Kemp dogs they have been around. The good out weighs the bad in my opinion.

Just to clarify...I have hunted with two that open on track just as much as my hounds but I have also hunted with some that don't open as much just like any other breed. There are great dogs in every color.

Now the one I got now he is fast and barkss really good on track and trees awsome but he was on cold trail couple times but never opened up till it warmed up over all he good dog

justaguy those were my dogs in that video about 7 years ago. Since then Mikes breeding program has come along ways. Those dogs were hand picked for me because I was doing alot of fox and cat hunting and prefered most of my dogs to be tight mouthed. The dogs Mike has now and sells to the general public tend to open good if they can move the track. Even the dogs in that video with age all open good. That track in that clip was froze solid it was 9 or 10 in the morning if I remeber corectly and it had froze about 3pm the day before they are plenty cold enough nosed for me and as I said with age all of those dogs in that clip open good

I buy a new one every year. Best young hounds I've ever hunted. Worth every penny.
