When I build one for a dog in need of one I measure lenght of dog then height of dog. From there I make depth the lenght of dog with a little extra then width is the hight of dog with a little extra and inside height is also height of dog. This allows them to lay down comfortably but not so big that they can't stay warm in winter.

I make plywood houses that are 4Lx2wx2h. It just makes it nice and even measurements on a sheet of plywood, no extra. I make it a solid box then cut a 12x 12 inch hole in the front for a door. Fill it with cedar chips and its ready.

i make mine out of one sheet of plywood. 2' t x 2'w x 3' l and in the 3' section cut a whole in the far side of one end and it allows them to get back in the end of it out of the wind and such. also cover the door with felt. and put roll on shingles on the top. to cut it rip a 4' x 8' sheet of plywood in half long ways and the out of each half cut out 2 sections that are 2' x 3' and that will leave you a two by two. you'll get that out of boths halves then just screw it together stain it shingle it cut a hole and throw shavings in. i also use thompsons water seal.
