how long do you think your hound should stay treed? most hounds with some encouragement will stat treed for a substantial amount of time with practice and encouragement. I think it falls into two categories the tree breed dogs and then the game bred dogs. tree hounds usually tree early and often the main aspect of training is to insist on their selection of the right tree. the game hounds don't bark as rapidly or falsely the draw back is they may be a bit silent trying to figure out how to reach the game. I have some dogs that will stay at tree or bay for a considerable amount of time until asked to leave. what bloodline is your dog? how many trees has it been to? I've heard of tying pups at the tree to help strengthen the tree instinct but have to admit that for me my hounds have probably been treeing for a good time before i get to the tree and when i get there they all do their best to show off. encourage early tree barking and use another hound to encourage the pup.

Gotta go with pegleg on this one. When they start treeing at when the are young give them lots of praise. I used to just get to the tree get them excited and then walk back a ways and sit down and wait. If the pups came to me or stopped treein' I would just walk them back over or tell them to get on that tree. It don't take long for them to catch on. They aren't all tree climbers. Some tree back off the tree a ways some try to get up it. Just depends on the dog.
