Is it ok to feed raw wild meat/bones/fat to dogs? bear, cat, lion, deer, elk etc?

I have for years. Maybe that's why my mutts have always been trashy!

I feed scraps from the deer/elk we get. Makes the dogs look a lot better then the dog foods i have tried , and it helps our skinny dog to hold weight.

butcher scraps are great for the dogs they eat less and hold up way better. only down fall is it a little more work cleaning out the bones but it is worth it to me. they poop alot less on it as well.

The bone is important also for calcium. So unless very large bone leave it in there.

Any meat, raw, cooked or any way you can get it is the best thing you can do for your dogs. If your worried about feeding raw meat, an easy fix is to throw it on the BBQ for a bit. I think dogs like it better cooked because of the incredible odor BBQ meat gives off.

when we kill a bear i feed the dogs as much as they will eat while they are still under the tree, its like a reward for them, makes them want to tree another.

I've fed the fat off deer to the dogs with there dog food and never had a problem. The dogs actually sift through the dog food to find the fat pieces. they go crazy for it

Pretty much anything raw or from the table is way better than dog food, no fillers and all that crap. I too feed all the fat and left over from my deer and elk to my dogs. Doesnt get any better !

You can give the dog trichinosis from raw meat especially from swine, bears and lion in warmer climates. Dewey

dogs have much stronger digestive juices than we do, so they are less inclined to get sick from bacteria in their food. Even slightly rank raw meat is ok for them.
I give my dogs table scraps. The big issues in table scraps are: 1) no cooked bones. Cooked bones splinter more readily and can result in punctured intestines. When they do chew them up, you end up with constipated dogs--turns to cement.
2)no chocolate, although it takes a fair amount to make a dog the size of a coonhound do more than puke.
3)moderation on onions and the like, especially if you keep the dog in the house or the cab of the truck! Seriously, dogs get gas from onions readily. Coonhounds are already inclined to bloat, so you don't want to tempt fate by giving them too many onions.
4) use common sense on fat. my hounds can tolerate a ladle full of fat from a roast on their kibble. However, if I let the pair of them lick out the entire roasting pan from the thanksgiving turkey, they will get the runs.
Hard running hounds in winter can tolerate a fair amount of fat. Hounds fed too much fat during the off-season will get fatty deposits on their livers and lose stamina.

Wow, this is really good information. Has anyone out there actually had a bad experience from feeding raw or table scraps? Just wondering how to view the shouldn'ts from the Oh shivnets.
Thanks, Sean

i have never had any bad experence or know anyone that has had any bab experence feeding raw meat to dogs. i did have a pit bull about 3 years ago that died from eating chicken bones, one splintered and punctured something in his neck, he bled out in just a couple of minutes, there wasnt anything i could do. that is the only incedent that i know of personally like that, would never had believed it had i not seen it. i used to feed them chicken bones all the time, will never do it again.
