For the housing at home, I build mine out of plywood. I build a 2x4 frame for the bottom, cover it with plywood, then build the rest of the framework out of 2x2's and cover that with plywood. I used to use galvanized nails, but I got tired of them constantly backing out, so now I screw the entire thing together. I think that it's a must to paint them. Painting them adds about 5 years of service to them. I also build mine toward the small side. In the winter it's easier for the dogs to stay warm if the space that they are in is small. For my camp set up, I use blue plastic barrels and throw dirt and grass hay in the bottoms. I also bolt short pieces of 2x6 onto the front of the barrels to keep them from rolling around.

I just recently bought a used storage shed. Cut some holes in the walls, frame the dog houses inside, wire it for lights, dog food storage, charging bench, feed and water and dogs all in one- works fantastic.

i just built mine out of plywood and insulated it with styrofoam insulation for the cold canadian winters. but i think if i were to do it again i would just buy ten square bales of straw and build them a house just stacking them up on each other.. it will probably only last one year but its cheap and easy and warm. please everyone refrain from big bad wolf jokes....

I use a plan, which I found on here if I remember right.
It uses a single piece of ply wood (1/2") for a dog house. I think it works good, but I can't find the plan on my computer, though I have it printed out.
Maybe someone else can post the picture or find the link on here?

I've been tryin to keep my shut but can't no more.Bro, I read on here that you got a cuple of hounds but you don't have box to haul them around in,don't have a way to track them, and now I'm readin that you don't have a place for them to sleep???
What got you into this? What are your priorities? What are your goals with them?Cuz man right now it seems as if your bass-acwards.Sorry for being a dick, but come on brotha.
The first thing I got was a truck that would get to the hills, use to meet some local houndsmen up there and at first I was just a tag and then a started learning the roads.Tehn it was hay Brandon go up there to the cut and leastin off that side for dogs 10-4 I knew right were they were talking about. I was tag and radio guy. Then I learned that they arn't barking 24-7.SOOO Then came tracking equipment."Well shit I got the dogs right here guys" some one had to come all the way to were I was to pick them up.I had dogs leashed up all over the place, cuz depepending were you at when you picking them up, you might actually be cutting them off from a nasty hole that dogs won't come out of for aslong as THEY want too.Well now I need box,so next time i can pick them up and do what ever needs to done.Well I pick up a cuple ung dogs that strayed away form the pack that diffinitly had something going. So they said Radar get to were you can hear them good and turn them back in.10-4, got to were I could hear them good I pulled out those two yungens they left my hands screaming every breath.Well you know what happend next,I wanted my own dog to turn lose and look for, listen for, track, pick up ect...But you see I had the stuff I needed and new a little bit of how to use it.Also sorry to tell you life story, may have smoke to much this time or its just that good

I use blue plastic barrels. Put a couple drain holes in the bottom. Screw a 2x4 along each side to keep them from rolling and cut a hole in one end. Works well , I just stuff them with clean straw for bedding. You can also put a piece of canvas over the front, however I don't seems dogs like to be able to see out. I live in Wisconsin with cold winters dogs are never cold.
Don't take it to heart what that last guy said. No 2 people have to do things the same. I've been huntin dogs for well over 30 years. Never had any way of tracking them back then , just leg work. Also had an old car put wire up behind the seat and back seat was instant dog box. Same with an old IH Scout. Not so nice when they killed a skunk but works. Just hunt them and enjoy yourself. Also pay attention to your dogs and the animals your hunting, They will teach you all you need to know.
