I was asked if I wanted to go on a bobcat hunt with a guy yesterday and we found a track and the guy turned loose 4 dogs on it. They followed the cat down into some old brushy type stuff that the cats could run around under but seemed hard for the dogs to get around in. We seen the bobcat twice as it run from one brush patch to another then back again but the dogs never did tree the bobcat. The snow was about 2 to 3 feet deep. Is this normal or should them dogs have gotten that cat?

The short answer, IMO, is yes.........yes it is normal, and yes the dogs missed a golden opportunity to put up some fur.

You answered your own question pretty much, you said it was hard for the dogs to get around, anytime your in that deep of snow and throw in the factor of brush, putting enough heat on a stubbie is pretty tough. I've watched many cats that were jumped only sink 6-8 inchs in the snow while dogs disappear in the stuff, and when its tough like that they can virtually walk in front of your dogs and laugh the whole time.

Thank you all for the responses. I was just wondering if this guys dogs were any good or what. Man I can sure see how this game can become addicting. He told me when he goes again he will give me a call.

If you are out in the basin again, and would like to go with a first class guy on a great cat hunt, look up a guy named Dick Bess. This guy used to live here in the valley a million years ago, and I've talked to him a time or two since he moved..even bought a dog from him. He got out of it for awhile, made a lot of money, but missed the hunt, so he has picked up a few dogs again. That is no easy thing, to close up shop, and then start all over again. Even against all those odds, he can still catch a cat, and you would have a lot of fun doing it. You would't have to deal with a huge ego, a bunch of &*^%$#&%^ and endless excuses the whole day either.. Just a thought. If you would like to see if he is avaialable, I could get you in touch with him..just let me know.. Anyway, good luck, and have fun as you explore the wonderful world of hounds..

I have had the same happen to me, and yes , what happened can be pretty normal cat hunting, but the same conditions on a differant day and them dogs will nail the cat. Makes you wonder

Katt Traxx,
I'm from Logan but have a few ties out in the basin. PM me his info and I will look him up. I would love to go hunting cats out there.
Ike do you know Dick Bess and do you two hunt with each other? Man that would be awsome to be able to hook up and go on a hunt.
Again thanks Katt Traxx, by the way where are you from and maybe I could go hunting with you sometime? Kevin and I never have been able to make our days match and I can't ever get ahold of houndog.
Thanks Mutz

Thanks Katt Traxx
I did talk to Dick on the phone and sounds like I might be headed out that way in a week or two. I also finally got to talk to Brent and hopefully we're going out this weekend. You guys are making me an addict. Dick also said I should try to hook up with you Katt Traxx as he told me quote: He's a real nice guy, and he catches alot of game. Never heard one houndogger talk that way about another so I thought I should tell you
Thanks again Mutz.
