howdy
Im fairly new to owning and running my own hounds. until recently ive been
running a couple jagds. not to long ago i picked up a walker female to add
some nose and voice to the mix. she is a 1year old and one those free
"shes well bred but never had anything done with her, might work, if not you
know what to do "deals. shes coming along good, she will start a track good
bays real hard and has a fair amount of grit but she wont tree. when she gets there
she looks for somthing else to hunt. one of my jagds will try to climb a tree and wont leave be he's silent and the other will just sit there and wait for somthing to fall out. So i dont have a dog to train her with and treeing is one of the main reasons i got her.
Do any of you guys have any tips tricks or methods to teach her how to tree?
or am I wasting my time?
thanks

ok heres the deal,
Lets say you're running coon. take a coon hide and play with her hard core, get er real excited and teach her its kind of like a toy. She's only a year old she still has plenty of pup in er yet. Then tie er up and get er realexcited 'bout that coon skin. lt er watch ya drag it across the yard and up into a tree where you can hang it. But heres the key, and you got to be willing to sacrifice the hide. Now hang it so she can "just" get er teeth on it and praise er and keep er excited about that hide. do this for many days, then what you cando is live trap urself a live coon. Take er by herself to a field near some woods. Spend a good twenty minutes to half hour teasing hewr with that coon in the cage, shake the cage and tell her stuff like get 'em ... get him..... watch him... and so on just keep an excited voice and she'll learn its an exciting fun adventure not work, and that she'll get praise from you. Then again, tie er up. shake the coon around in that cage a bit and get her real excited, then cut it loose and let her watch it run away. give it a good lead, then cut her loose. She should take off right after it. watch what line that coon took then watch the line she takes to se how far off she is, but dont worry. keep an eye to see where that coon goes, did it go up a tree? which one? Now when she trees at first tie her to that tree and keep her excited, slap ur hand on the tree and say "get up here .... get him.... come on girl get him...." again, keep an excited voice with her. Now dont keep her waiting too long for the first couple then shoot that damn thing out of the tree and let her have him, plasy tug of war with her if you have to, and let her have the reward. Give her a chunk of meat or some sort of treat the first few times she trees well and she'll get the point that this is what she's suppose to be doing. Let me know how it goes.

another thing that you can do is to get that live trapped coon and attach urself a rope to it. take her out to a wooded area, or somewheres that u can string that coon up with that rope...like a pulley. sick her on it on the ground, you can either have her on a lead or off the lead if shes got a good handle on her. you dont want the tree to be too big, just big enough that a branch on it will hold the roped cage. then after u get done sicking her on it you can keep her on the leash, or let her off. let her fight it for awhile...then pull the cage up a little and let her keep fighting it. you can take a 22 with ya if you want...it will aide in it. pull the cage all the way up to the where the branch meets the tree and she will tree on it. keep it there for about a minute. rub her side real lightly and tell her skit it or whatever u wanna tell her. then, this is very important...shoot the gun in a safe direction. AS SOON as u shoot, drop the cage down to the dog. keep doing this til its second nature to it.
HOPES THIS HELPS

thanks guys
I guess im gettin ahead of myself, shes only a year old and been on 10 or so coon
but only 5 trees because my jagds catch on the ground alot. she did a little better
last night, but the coons treed really high so she couldnt see em. I did chain the
other dogs and play with a dead coon last night and she went along with it for a
while but doesnt show alot of interest after theyre dead. so im headed out this
morning to go set some cage traps.
good hunting to ya

It's best to start with a hound that has the treeing ability bred into it. jmo then all you got to do is show it game the rest is breeding.

yep...very important! if a dog aint got no tree sense...it dont make sense to try to expect it to tree. jmo though. different abilities and and traits come in and with different dogs. not that yours dont have the ability.

Exactly Norcal Kemmer. I have one of these pups out of Hoff. Hardwood Bozo, Sampson bred. Yesterday I took something and hung it up in a tree. Only the second time hes seen or smelled something like this. When I let him out he played for a minute and then caught a whiff of it. Took off running, located it and just went to treeing. When I pulled him off he slipped his collar and went right back. Now thats breeding.

You guys are probaly right about breeding, problem is im not sure what her breeding is
and even if I did I wouldnt know what to make of it. The guy I got her from said she
was pretty well bred, but you know how that goes. but I figure Ill give her a fair
chance and see how it goes
good huntin
