I live south of you 20min. I've got a couple walkers run mostly bear, but did manage to put 1 cat up last year. I would like to do more cat hunting this year. Is it easy to find a cat track around your area

Yeah cat tracks are around here, but we gotta go north of 10. Thats the line we cant hunt for em any further south in Michigan. PM me and I'll keep in touch with ya. I'm definately running this winter.

Bobcat tracks are usually in thick spots, balsams and tag alders along the creeks and rivers. I find them in balsams frequently and if there are rabbit hunters around there are usually cats around. The thicker the spoit is the better. once you find where they are at they usually are in the swamps around. I like to check culverts and creek bottoms the best. Most michigan cats dont tree real easy so dont get discouraged if they dont. There are a few cats north of 10 but there are more east of 75 and north of grayling than to the south. Good luck finding them and getting them going

Not too many cat hunters in Michigan eh? That or not too friendly apparently. Figured people would enjoy being able to hook up with fellow hunters and share ideas and a good time?

I do not want to discourage you from looking for someone to help you with your pup.

When i first started hunting, i had no help at all except from folks trying to sell me a dog.
But as soon as they found out i had access to some great private land to hunt, here they come in droves to help me out.

This was just their way of locating my hunting grounds, then going back and getting all the game killed off. You are better off just finding someone close to you that has dogs.
You can buddy up and just go training. If you have game it will not take long for your dogs to get the message of what you want them to do.

Be really careful of the company you keep. It cost me lots of private land that i had only for myself. I really wanted to have company with me, i do not like hunting by myself.

After 20 years of running dogs, i feel this more even now. Buy yourself an older dog, this old dog will do everything you need. Train you and your young dog.
That will be the best investment you can make.

Reminds me of going Deer and Elk hunting. You always have lots of friends during hunting season when you know were the game is.

Good Luck

hey im in the same boat as you. i was lucky to have a good friend who hunts with a crew of guys pretty good. they are letting me tag in and even letting me toss my pup in for some training. i was pretty happy about that cuz they have good dogs. i was just nervous about the whole thing. i didnt want to be that guy butting in and all that. if my hound was good enough to run by himself i would say hell yeah come on out. but hes 8 months and still has no clue on whats going on.

Appreciate the understanding guys, yeah I'm still hanging in there. Running drags and a couple other techniques. Maybe I'll be dropping her in all alone on some track. Can only deal with what I have available you know.

I have a rule that has served me well for over 25 years,If someone takes me to his private hunting area I don't go back without him or without his ok to do so believe me lifes too short to treat fellow hunters like this.frank

Wild ferrel/barn cats are better than drags. Get permission to live trap some field barns. Give the cat a good lead time or you wont have a very long race. A cut field with trees a way off works good.
