Thoughts of a Hound Thief....

Just felt this should be thrown out there.... My thoughts of a Hound thief.

Back in old days if they didnt shoot a horse thief on sight, they were HUNG...
I think Dog stealing should be held at the same level of seriousness.
A horse is no more valuable to people than our dogs can be...

Now here's what I propose.
I feel it is our unsworn duty as fellow houndsmen to familiarize ourselves with posted lost or stolen dog listings on here on a regular basis. Also, I feel anyone who condones such acts of childish, and dishonest behavor shall be banned from this site. A LOT of time, hard earned money, as well as feelings go into our beloved hounds. No one deserves such cruel acts of thievery against them. It only takes a few minutes to view the updated listings on a regular basis.

Please give some input on this subject...

Well, about a month ago, I took it serious enough that I had all sorts of bad temtations aimed at a couple of POS's! Everything from blasting their @#$ses with my 40 to burning their pickups down in their driveway. It brought out a side of me that hasn't been seen in years. I have always believed that violence and physical pain were very good deterrents for bad behaviour. Maybe I shouldn't expose this side of me on the web, but right is right, wrong is wrong, and consequences and accountability still matter in my little world.

agreed wholeheartedly! what would drive someone to do something so low as to steal a persons dog? and how could they not picture the time, love, money, and work they are taking away from someone by doing this? i tell ya what...to any dog thiefs on here, read these posts, read em well. memorize em! then realize what the hell you're really stealing next time you take someone elses hound(or any dog or thing for that matter). you aint just taking a dog, here are some things you are taking from me by doing this;
my huntin buddy, my 6 year olds best friend, family companion, hours of my time, thousands of dollars outta my pocket, and the list goes on and on and on. so if you're okay with that, p.m me, and or call me(541-220-0725), and we can talk. just so me and mine can make a list of some things we can take from you. No, but really...not pointing fingers at anyone on here specifically(unless the finger needs pointing), just makes me sick to think of someone going that low. anyhow, enough of the rambling. thanks for taking the time to read and hopefully understand this. HAPPY HUNTING!

coyotecopper,

I think this is a good thread, and I do agree. I don't have a lot, and I don't mess with other people's stuff, but if somebody messes with my hounds or my horses, there is no threat. None! There is no hesitation, there is no second thought, it's already been planned carefully. Thanks Uncle Sam!

I understand you guys thoughts on Dog stealing THIEVES . I will illustrate one point that I am sure many of us have done at one time or another . While we have been out rigging we have seen hounds on the side of the road . If they have a Collar ID tag we leave them alone . On more than one occasion we have seen the hound 2 days in the same place .on the 2nd day we picked them up ,took them home , took care of them food and water , then tried contacting the owner , sometimes no response . Even went to the point of going to the owners house , No one home , left a note on door with my name address and phone number telling him I had his hound everything was ok . 3 days latter comes over to the house wanting to get a little western about stealing his hounds . Ended up calling the Sherriffs Dept over that one . Like I said I will Not pick up a hound the first day I see them . But we have picked up others since then , Including the previously mentioned A-HOLE  BUT I still call the Warden Service and the Sherriffs office to report what I have done . Most houndsmen have been appreciative for the follow-up . Some people no matter how you try to help could care less :agmnt

It bothers me to even think, we would have a member which would steal another mans dog, as someone mentioned. Its not common here, and there is reasons for it, old time thinking. The other thing which I've been faced with, is a city person moved in, two pups ended up at his house, and was running around the chicken coop. He had a gun in hand and threatened to shoot them or me. After kissing his Ass for twenty minutes, trying to explain it was beyond my control, and I would have gladly paid for any damage to his animals, his threats to me and my dogs, I snapped bad, a side i hope i never see again. He clearly understands what the consequences will be if he shoots or harms my dogs.

dog thieves = low lifes. it seems to be happening a lot around here. they know a little about dogs (dont know much or they would not be stealing them). they don't care how we or our kids feel about our dogs. they think it is easy money. they have to have a buyer or they would not be stealing them. that makes the buyer just as sorry. i have had two dogs stolen from me that i know were stolen. other's that came up missing while out hunting.

I guess one of the advantages of living in a very RURAL area is after a while everybody gets to know the GOOD people from the Bad . I can only say that from talking to the local warden and a few sherriffs that the few times this has happened is the bottom line of Wannabee Hunters generally in their 20's to early 30's NOT wanting to spend the money , time , effort and training ,all the usual hard work we all go through to instantly become bear hunters. Sad state of society we live in Today. I suppose there have been some sold on this forum ,Can't say for sure . I have yet to purchase a hound I have Not hunted behind before buying the lone exception was a B&T purchased in upper mid-west by my son after he had checked 5 or6 references . I guess what I am saying is to ASK the right questions and get references as best as you can.

I have never had dogs stolen by antis, I have had problems with other hunters picking my dogs up in the woods and then driving them miles out of the way to their house. Have a buddy last year hunting the East side here. out of town houndsmen picks up his dog and drove it home to the coast. Look I have never left a hound out in the woods when I didnt come back everyday looking trying to beep it. If you pick up a dog DONT take it miles and miles away from where you found it. Had another buddy lost a dog here in Northern Ca. Another visiting hunter grabbed it and took it L.A. Why. It makes no sense.

Bear Hunter : You raise a Good point . In our case 95% of the time we are hunting a 25 mile radius of the house . As stated we have only picked up hounds that had contact ID on them and only if found on the second day or latter . Just a matter of RESPECT and helping a fellow houndsman . You can't put a price on hounds . In my estimation some are worth 5cents some are worth $5,000.00 either way I would hope a fellow houndsman would return the favor . also a simple call to the warden or sherriffs office goes a LONG way in CYA " covering your ass" if any suspicion arises. Better to ERR on the safe side than to have your name spread around as a trouble maker or Malcontent . Nastiness , dishonestyis NOT what we want to be known for . Hard to keep a GOOD reputation in our small world of Hound Bear Hunting

I think dog thieves are scum as much as anyone. However, all you cowboys who think you live in the old west really should think twice before following through on your threats there is alot to lose and not much to gain from even threatening someone physically. I'd never put any dogs life ahead of a mans life, with the exception of some bad people like kid touchers and murderers. All it takes is a little bad luck for a good ole passionate ass whippin' to turn into first degree murder.

When I'm talking about how they "USE" to hang men or shoot em on sight, and that it should be held to the same amount of seriousnes, I'm not meaning go out and start getting trigger happy or tying a noose for every man that picks up your dog. Because you are right BK and BB. Now days, things ARE a lot different. However, that gives no man the right to 1.) pick up your dog for reasons of keeping it or selling it, let alone 2.) Coming onto my DAMN PROPERTY for reasons of trying to take one of my dogs. Now, I understand wholeheartedly about guys picking up a dog thats been out a couple days and has contact info on the collar, that can be a darn lifesaver for your dog depending on the circumstances.

I think we can ALL take a few pieces of education from this post.
1.) Like B.B.J. stated C.Y.A. We might not all like the C.O.'s or wardens but a simple call to them can turn the tables and keep you out of jail AND help keep the suspicion off YOU!
2.) Do not I repeat DO NOT go out picking every frickin dog up you see in the woods thinking " I'm SAVING THE DAY! ". You may be hindering the dogs training or the owners hunt and we sure as hell would not want someone butting in on our hunt.
Use common sense, and don't get carried away. Fact is their ARE a lot of us out there sometimes in any given area, its just a matter of time before we run into eachother. Give them the respect and most likely you'll get it in return. Thanks guys for your input. Keep posting, and I'll keep reading.
