The Commissioners of the Nevada Department of Wildlife, voted unanimously 8-0 to legalize bear hunting in Nevada. Right on! It won't be much but it is one hell of a kick in the teeth to the HSUS, IDA, and all the other groups aligned against us. Now I could hunt bear and cougar a couple of hours from home. When I leave California it will probably be to Nevada. -Pete

Unfortunately, even though we now have the season, the proposed season structure does not support houndsmen.
It is basically a 45 tag quota - 40 resident and 5 nonresident.
There is a 20 total bear and 6 female bear subquota.
Archery season is proposed as June 1-Sept 14, no hounds. ALW season is proposed as Sept 15-Dec. 15, hounds allowed.
So, there is a draw, only 45 total tags, and when 6 sows or 20 total bears are killed, the season is shut down. There is no seperate quota for ALW or archery seasons.
I can see the archery season closing down the bear season quick, and if not, then it will be shut down VERY soon into they ALW season.
I sent a letter that brings out the thought of breaking it up some more so there are seperate quotas, and which also allow hound persuit even if the season is closed.
They want them afraid of people - can't think of a better way.
Later,
Marcial

I still see it as very positive for your state, and you folks have forward momentum, a step at a time and you will have some bear dogs in training

It is a BIG POSITIVE. I know oine of the guys involved with that. They had to get their foot in the door. Acording to him Nevada doesnt have a big bear population. The bear are mostly California bear that have moved over. The way they got it in was because of the problem bears that are being habituated to humans. They have been studying different methods to solve the problem including harassement with dogs and rubber bullets, even relocation. This is just another tool for them. It''s a start and we should be thankful.

I agree , it is a step in the right direction....... BUT.... Now we need to Change a season and law that could have been right from the start.(reguarding the early season with no hounds).
I went to the county advisory board meeting here in Elko and they didnt even want to hear about how they should allow hounds in the early season or even a persuit season. They said lets just get a hunt started and then try to fix it later.
I think we should have done it right the 1st time instead.
