JUST TO REFLECT ON AN EARLIER SUBJECT OF CUTTING LION TRACK AT NIGHT. #1 I BELEIVE IN 100% ETHICAL FAIR CHASE OF ANY GAME! JUST WANTED TO HEAR SOME MORE INPUT ABOUT ANYONE ELSE HAVING ANY RUN INS WITH THE LAW ABOUT CARRYING FLASH LIGHTS, FIREARMS AND THEIR DOGS WHILE OUT CUTTING TRACK. IT IS MULE DEER RUT SEASON RIGHT NOW AND NMDGF DID POST ON THEIR WEBSITE THAT "WE, HUNTERS AND ANGELERS" SHOULD BE EXPECTING DELAYS BECAUSE OF ROADBLOCKS AND CHECK POINTS. I THINK THIS IS GREAT, BUT I DONT BELEIVE IN THE HARASSMENT EITHER! ANYMORE TAKERS ON THIS SUBJECT?????

FYI, NM passed a new regulation starting next hunting season that dogs can not be turned out until legal hunting hours. In the past it has been a grey area open for interpetation. Now its clearly spelled out.

A rule i like because i feel driving around all night and turning out on a fresh hour old track at 3am then waiting in the truck or at the tree until legal hunting hours is not FAIR CHASE nor ETHICAL in my eyes.

I cant throw too many stones because I did it too when I first started with hound hunting, but it made the harvest tainted to me so I quit doing it

There is nothing illegal about cutting tracks in the dark as long as your not using spotlights or above average powered flashlights. But if a game wardens stops you expect to be questioned, thats there job. If a game warden doesnt stop a guy who's running around all night pointing flash lights out the window they aint worth a sh!t at there job!

FIRST OF ALL I NEVER SAID OR INPLIED I HAVE EVER TURNED OUT ON A TRACK AT NIGHT. I WAS TOLD BY A WARDEN THAT I COULD TURN OUT BUT COULD NOT SHOOT AND FOLLOW WITH A FLASHLIGHT AND A FIREARM UNTIL LEGAL " SHOOTING HOURS". I GET UP EARLY AT AROUND 2:30 AM AND LOAD UP, FUEL UP,AND DRIVE 1:45 TO GET TO MY DESTINATION. DOESNT LEAVE MUCH TIME FOR CUTTING TRACK IN THE DARK? I DO NOT RUN WITH "THE GUYS" THAT DONT SLEEP. I HUNT ONLY WITH PEOPLE I TRUST. THANK YOU FOR YOU INPUT AND INFORMATION ON THE NEW REGULATION.

personally thats why i feel lion hunting has turned into such a joke....drive 2 hours to get to an area to look for a track....then go around the corner and find someone sleeping in there truck on a lion track waiting for legal hunting hours to get here....or find someone coming out of that road that has been in there sence 2am cuttting country....my most favorite thing to find on a fresh snow is someone decides to road about 12 dogs out of the area and leave 12,000 dog tracks all over .... the things that make you want to sleep in an drink coffee by the fire.....

I KNOW THE FEELING, IT DOES SUCK TO PULL UP ON SOMEONE SITING ON A TRACK. I USUALLY IF NOT WORKING WILL GO DURING THE WEEK. I WAIT 12 HOURS AFTER A SNOW, THEN HIT EVERY DAY UNTILL I CUT A GOOD TRACK. THIS HAS WORKED OUT GOOD FOR ME AND IF THERES TOO MANY PEOPLE IN AN AREA I HUNT TILL 9 AM AND HEAD HOME

It does suck but thats part of it. Its happened to me this year all ready. The guy was a little prick to boot. I introduced myself and he was just snobby as hell. I told him good luck I hope they catch it and he told me. "oh we will catch it." As if he was the second coming of Dale Lee. But I just pull up my big boy pants and keep a huntin. There are more lions to run. Cant let those P.O.S. guys slow you down.

Here in Montana we have the same problems. The possies we call them will have 6-8 trucks running all night long . Then when there cut a track to run they all get together and turn 20 dog's out. Then i think they all hold hands and walk to the tree because there afraid I guess. And with that many dogs how do you know if your dog's doing any thing but tagging along. To each his own

Joe I can relate............found a track at about 5 am and went back to get my dogs. By the time I got back right at daylight, another local POS had found my track and turned out on it.

He knew that it was me and he fully knew that he was jumping my track..

I have been on both end of this and it is what it is. If you weren't on the mountain @ 2:00am cutting roads on the wheelers and sleds you weren't going to be turning the hounds loose that day.

It doesn't do any good to complain, either get up earlier or start hunting the areas that most guys dont want to hunt. There are plenty of areas to hunt, most people just dont want to have to work to find a track.

I personally like riding my pony with 20ish hounds and leaving 12,000 dog tracks for others to sort through...lol I figure it makes up for me freezing while others are smart enough to cruise around in their trucks, wheelers and sleds.

Best of luck this season fellas. Oooh and if anyone needs a pair of bigboy pants i think they are on sale at IFA. I just had to go get a few pair to make it through the week.

First of all, starting off as a coon hunter I think its a dumb law. But, it is the law in some states so stay on the right side. Second, the early bird gets the worm. Stop crying. At least the guys were waiting until legal light and not turning loose on all the game while you are trying to be legal. Its tough to compete with a herd of pickups. I'd fire up the sled and go where trucks can't. I dislike seeing other hunters in the woods. I always try to find my solo spot. Maybe I should move to Northern Canada.

I ran bears in Idaho for 12 years, not much of a lion hunter.
I could not stand the cold. I hand snow machines but did not use them much.

But I can tell you every tom, dick and harry that had a dog would run every road out at night. If you planned on looking for a track after a snow you just hand to try and beat these all-nighters on the hill and sit on the track.

But if the track crossed the road up ahead of you, these assholes would turn loose in front of you.

i just could not stand to play their games.

Sometimes it is better to just stick to bears. Even then if someone found your bait they would go up after dark and run off your bait.
You get there next morning and here is dog tracks running up the road past your bait.

The assholes would just say, i did not know you had a bait there?
This is why i retired, caught more than my share and figured, I am not mad at those bears anymore.

Im going to have to agree with Jason on this one. Maybe now that the secrets out on the big boy britches there will be a few less hound hunters shopping at the womens boutique.......
