I remember a while ago there were posts about people looking into dogo's and other dogs for protection against wolfs while hunting hounds. I was wondering if anyone knows anything about the wolf hound. A lady at my work just had a litter of them and I guess they get well over 100 lbs and historicly are bred to kill wolfs???? Anyone have any experience with these dogs.

One WOLF HOUND against 5 or 6 wolfs? Now you have 3 dead hounds and one dead Wolf hound. I don't think the wolf hound will stick with the hound for a hour or two of cold trailing then the race , then a hour or two or more of treeing til you get their. Maybe I'm wrong? But how many wolf hounds would you need in your pack to make a fair fight? And then who is going to protect your hounds from 5or6 wolf hounds? Once again maybe I'm wrong.

I'm sure somebody has tried all this before... and humbly swallowed the experience.

I have no idea, I dont know anything about the wolf hound or anything i was just simply asking what you guys knew. Never said what they could or couldnt do.

The irish wolf hound was bred for hunting and killing wolves in Irland that where about the size of a large coyote. Not a 150 timber or canadian wolf.

The wolf hound of today is just a remanant breed that was "rescued" from extinction and is not realy the same as the dogs used to hunt wolves. They used a small remanent population and several other large breeds....

ahhh i c. Well I knew you guys would have the answers to it lol.

i see lots of issues:

1. the biggest and best are sight running hounds, which do no good in the big woods.
2. they are BIG so they don't live as long. i've read that you might get 7 years or so out of one thats about it.
3. they are EXPENSIVE. several thousand for a pup.
4. not sure a big dog like that could keep up with smaller hounds all day, or if it would even want to.
5. 1v1 they might match up to a wolf pretty well, but wolves don't fight like that. they will only fight when the odds are stacked squarely in their favor. so it might be pointless unless you have 3-4 or more at a time. thats a lot of dog handling going on.

something i think might work better is to just breed larger hounds from breeds already used. 100 lbs is a big hound, but if your whole pack is this big, they might stand a better chance.

pit bull or some kind of bulldogs from the animal shelter may be fix your problems, i used them in my country to protect my hounds from javalina may be work with wolf they are strong and fearless, and if you lose one pitbull is more easy to replace a pitbull that a good hound. I don´t know to much about wolfs but i see here is a big problems for the hunters.

I use Pitbulls here in Alaska also american bulldogs if you can get them to not kill your hounds or each other they will tear them wolves a new one no problem . The wolf is a curr at heart soon as those bulldogs latch on the wolves freak out and snap and scream and die. Done many times works well.

Oldkennelhand. I'm just curious, have you actually seen a pitbull kill a wolf? I find that pretty amazing. Not doubting you, but, could you give some details?

what do you guys think about running a cross between a chihuahua and a weiner dog? i have seen some that were pretty mean and i think that if you ran a couple with your pack of hounds they would handle a WHOLE pack of wolves in short order!!!!!!!

Really though , I see a few guys going with larger breed dogs like big plotts and B&T dogs in their packs for some size . All it will do is buy you time but still... better than not . I'm running out of "safe " bear country here . It is hard to drive passed ranges full of bear and lion because of wolves . All of the "safe " stuff is getting crowded .
