im sure everyone agrees first thing is brains. i put athletic ability higher on my list than most people . determination is a big factor. a good nose but dont stand on there head . a good tree dog but it better be there . good rig dog . those are some main things i look for. brains and determination are my top 2.

Well, reading posts to your post, there are some good tips for you.
Sitting here waiting on Christmas to happen, let me add some more?
Best advise: Take time, no matter how tough, go and hunt with dog before you commit! That is experience talking from both sides of trade/purchase! For one, country, type, environment where dog is good may not be same as where your going to hunt him? And then through in what you consider a good dog vs what makes a good dog in dogs's home country may be total opposites.
Don't expect a dog from snow country to come into dry ground country that is dry to really "shine". May do so, but don't count to much on it!
How about good clean running vs. thickets, blowdowns, cedar breaks, etc.----bought pretty little Walker female from Northern states 2 years ago that was a good cat dog up there. With my pack, in SE OK thickets, she looked like someone had taken a razor to her chest and front legs after 2 hour race. And she was about 100 yds behind all the time! I gave her away!
One final thing---don't listen to much to excuses about why dog is not performing. Said I have been on other side---my best dogs screw up!!
Some one calls and asks to buy a finished dog?--well about time I say my best dogs are sure enough straight and good cat dogs---then I have hunt like night before last where I run a bobcat(or maybe just "peck-around" on track) for 1.5 hours--to just end with nothing!!!
Enough rambling, and good luck on finding what you ask for,
Clyde
