ok i have a littermate to this female and he was an excelent tree dog,and when dean (an older man) saw him he wanted a littermate,so he bought one.well he just had her out today and she showed no intrest in a caged coon,so his female was runnin around nosing the ground while my two pups outa my female of the same age and my male thats same age were hammering away, these pups turn 6 months old on jan2,2011..so he left his dog here and said he wants it to start treein and he took my 6month old male so i wouldnt have to feed an extra dog..but the question is..how should i start her?ima get her used to me first then il take her on some walks in the woods..should i do some scent drags to the coon and see what she does?cause she likes scent drags in the pen but thats all hes done with her..so i was thinkin either a house cat to run loose infront of her or some scent to a coon,or even a dead coon to chew on...maybe take her huntin with an old dog?im not sure what to do but ima try my hardest to make this man happy,he owns the huntn club in town and sells nite light supplies and dog food and he always squares me away so i wanna square him away...any advice would be helpful because all the ones iv trained were naturals and dont mess with the ones who jerk around, but il try it and tell yall how it goes..

If it is 19 months old and not even showing interest on a caged coon I would tell the guy to plug and get a different one. Better to be putting your time into a dog that will atleast bark on something.

19 months old is not a pup any more. sometimes we have to face the fact that not all of them make it.

I agree. Because the guy is a friend I would go ahead and try a couple times. Let it get used to your other dogs a couple days then take a caged animal and let em all at it. If that dont get him fired up I would tell your friend you tried but the dog just isnt going to cut it.

I like the naturals better myself. But... Some dogs need a couple looks. If its never been around game that makes it more "shocking." If it doesn't come around, then I agree. Won't make a hunter. Keep us posted on how it goes.

"he left his dog here and said he wants it to start treein and he took my 6month old male so i wouldnt have to feed an extra dog"

Really? Gee. Sure nice of him to be so considerate.

But beyond that - I bought a two year old bluetick a few years back that had never been out of a guy's backyard. That dog was dumb!!! - To start with. Took him to the woods a few times and that's all that was needed. Sure wish I had that dog back now - He was NICE. Anyway, a car and a road crossing stopped that. Darn it.

Don't be too quick to judge him is what I think. But do judge him after after quite a few trips to the woods where your other dogs have correctly done their thing.

Put a short scent drag with that critter and put it up a tree. Let us know how it goes.

Naturally, the dog is supposed to trail up the animal, and tree it. just showing the dog an animal in a cage in my opinion is not doing any good for your dog. make a drag for the coon and hide it whether that be in a tree or on the ground. see if the dog hits the track and shows interest. I have a treein walker that also was a yard dog for its whole life, about a year or so. he didnt have any idea what was going on at first, but a few trips to the woods and he is a whole different dog. every time out he improves more and more. i gues you never really know till you give the dog a chance.

Alot of times it seems people don't put proper time into something. Just needed a nudge sounds like.

You can lay drags, use caged coons and what ever else you want to do, but the only way to make a dog is to hunt it on game. I have seen a lot of top dogs that would not run a drag or tree on a pet coon. Take them to the woods with a older dog and hunt them. Dewey
